| Minutes of the September 5, 2001 Meeting | |
Attending: Beach, Dodd, Farley, Fry, and Hosier.
Mr. Fry welcomed back Anne Beach who is replacing Dr. Ragon as the Public Service and Extended Education representative.
Mr. Fry reviewed recent discussions on the type of swing space that will be used during building renovations. It is now being suggested that a metal building(s) be constructed behind Friday Hall prior to the beginning of the Westside Hall renovation project. This space would be used during all renovation projects through the completion the end of the Friday Hall. It would then be used to house labs for Biology and Physics or Earth Sciences. The group feels that a sector plan should be developed for this portion of the campus and questioned whether or not this should be considered a permanent or temporary structure. The campus master plan also needs to be reviewed. It was suggested that architects who are here working on other buildings should be consulted about their vision for the campus. Mr. Fry will take the metal building and associated site proposal to the Cabinet on September 6th.
Question was raised about the interpretation of Chancellor's walk. Mr. Fry indicated that the Board's intention was to have this walk stretch from Randall (last president of Wilmington College) Library to Wagoner (first chancellor of UNCW) Hall. Mr. Rowell will be questioned on this at next week's meeting.
Timelines for several projects were discussed. The Watson School of Education building will be bid in November with initial construction to take place in January-February of 2002. Expected completion date is mid-fall 2003 with classes schedule to begin in the spring of 2004. Sharon needs to provide information on the status of the warehouse and printshop projects. Mr. Fry asked that user representatives on project teams be identified and sent to him so that web-based information can be updated. It was suggested that a new building schedule should be published in the next 30 days.
