University Facilities

Minutes of the February 7, 2001 Meeting

Attending: Rowell, Farley, Hosier, Boyd, Dodd, Fry, Kolodij, Bianco, and Russell

  1. Mr. Fry reported on the status of the New Centre Drive facility. The contractor expects to have all work completed by Friday, February 9th. Personnel may begin moving into this facility on Monday, February 12th. The Vice Chancellors will be having their weekly meeting at New Centre on Wednesday, February 14th.
  2. Dr. Hosier presented information about moves that have been scheduled in the Academic Affairs division. He announced that anticipated move of the School of Nursing to Friday Hall has been postponed until after the Friday Hall renovations are completed. He emphasized the need to get the Office of the President (OP) to agree to an expansion of Friday Hall using the renovation monies allocated for the renovation project. This request to expand Friday Hall will require UNCW to alter have its overall construction and renovation schedule. He is proposing that a request for architects be initiated so that a proposed list can be taken to the Board of Trustees in July. In the meantime, UNCW must present a proposal to OP for the expansion of Friday Hall. Major factor in this proposal needs to be the continuing expansion of the marine sciences program and the resulting need for student laboratory space. In addition, the renovation of Friday Hall without additional lab space will make it impossible to adequately meet the programming needs of the university's science programs. He reported that in order to provide the current Friday Hall occupants with the space needed to function at a minimal efficiency level, the university would have to rent sixteen 70' x 28' modular units - funds for these would need to come from the funds allocated for the current renovation projects. By constructing the addition prior to renovating the facility and then relocating Friday Hall occupants in this new space, the number of modular facility could be significantly reduced. Of major concern is the cost of relocating personnel during all renovation projects, and the need to impose guidelines on allowed space enhancements for temporary moves. Dr. Hosier reviewed the monies that would be available for renovations once all fees and contingencies have been factored into the projects. This review emphasized the point that the amount of money available for actual renovations will be far below the dollars shown in the bond literature. It was agreed that the university must not raise community expectations to an unreasonable level. Copies of the Dr. Hosier's slides were distributed to each committee member. Mr. Fry requested that Dr. Hosier be prepared to make a presentation at the February 14th Cabinet meeting.
  3. Information about the cost of planned moves into vacant Westside Hall space was presented by Dr. Hosier and Mr. Russell. After discussion it was decided that Mr. Russell collect cost data on these moves from University Relations (moving from Alderman to Hoggard), Research Administration (moving from Hoggard to Westside), and Student Services moving a portion of its operations from 2nd floor of Westside to 1st floor of the same facility. Following discussion by the Committee at its next meeting, this information will be shared with the Cabinet for decisions on priority and funding sources.
  4. The Facilities Committee will meet on Wednesday, February 14th, in Alderman 211 at 7:30 AM.
