Minutes of the February 14, 2001 Meeting

Attending: Rowell, Farley, Hosier, Boyd, Dodd, Fry, Kolodij, Bianco, Russell, and Norman Bemelmans

  1. Mr. Fry reported on the February 7th meeting of the Vice Chancellors where the following items were discussed (list taken from VC minutes):
    1. The first moves to New Center Drive can take place next week.
    2. Availability of money for the moves.
    3. On the issue of the cost of moving, there needs to be a definition of what this means (i.e. buying new furniture). Mr. Russell is collecting information on non-bond moves.
    4. The need to be conservative about expectations for actual renovations. While the dollar amounts may sound quite substantial, approximately one-third will be deducted for planning and other expenses.
    5. Increasing the footprint of Friday Hall. If this is possible, there would be less of a need for temporary facilities, while without the increase, it may take up to 16 trailers to fill the building needs. If we decide to move forward on this, a request should be made to GA-OP very soon.
    6. Difficulty in finding space to duplicate large teaching labs.

Paul Hosier will attend the next meeting to discuss some of these issues.

  1. Members were asked to provide any comments on the presentation that Dr. Hosier will make at the next VC meeting. His presentation will include information on the total fee costs associated with the building construction and renovation process.
  2. Mr. Kolodij and Mr. Bemelman provided information on the Kenan Auditorium engineering report. This report indicated that the building did not meet current wind load requirements nor is the foundation strong enough to support building expansion. To expand the space, the engineers suggested that an external shell be constructed using new pilings. The current need is to expand facility by 300-400 seats. To accomplish this need, a third tier would be added and seating in second and third tiers wrapped around the sides of the auditorium. There are current problems with the acoustical configuration of the building. Sound gets trapped in the back of the balcony because the area is too deep. Immediate needs include repair of rigging and increased storage and restroom facilities. Architects for the new Creative Arts facility will need to help the campus make some decisions about use of Kenan Auditorium as a possible alternative to the performance venue originally to be funded from private resources. The master plan presented to the VC's at their last meeting suggested that the creative arts building be located at the front of campus between Kenan Auditorium and Kenan Hall. Cost of the 140-150,000 square foot building would be higher if located here because of need to strictly conform to modified Georgian architecture. The Kenan Auditorium needs to be integrated into arts programming whether or not a performance venue is built. This venue, if build, needs to be an anchor point for university-community relationship. At this point, a small group of community people wants this performance center built. It was noted that this project is a quality of life versus an economic issue. VC's need to hear that we cannot just say we are not building the performance center. This approach would generate considerable PR problems. Recommend that the Creative Arts facility and Performance Hall projects be divided in two.
  3. The Facilities Committee will meet on Wednesday, February 28th, in Alderman 211 at 7:30 AM.
