University Facilities Committee

Minutes of the November 20, 2002 Meeting

Attending: Anne Beach, Sharon Boyd, Ed Davis, Carolyn Farley, Bob Fry, and Bobby Miller

Mr. Fry report on the last cabinet meeting where the Warwick Center’s future use and the James Hall project were discussed. Cabinet members requested that the Committee develop a plan for Warwick Center use. The only offices now considered for this building are Registrar, Financial Aid, and Student Accounts/Cashier. Mr. Davis will talk to Mr. Jordan about planning funds for Warwick. Plan to be submitted to Cabinet should include use of James Hall if cited offices are to be relocated.

Ms. Farley reviewed her proposed office relocation plan for the University Union renovation project. She will attempt to identify space in new student center facility to be used as gathering space for current users of the Upperman Center. Committee will also consider using Library space to house Campus Diversity Office and Upperman Center Staff. Since Ms. Farley’s plan involves using the Wagoner Hall space being vacated by General College, questions were raised about Business Affairs’ plan to convert this location into a food service venue. After discussion, Ms. Boyd was asked to study this further and return with a report at a subsequent meeting. Potential use of Randall Library space was also discussed. Mr. Fry will discuss this need with Drs. Hosier and  Hill and possibly Mr. Hayes prior to the next meeting. Several suggestions were made about the possible use of Burney Center during the Union renovation process. These included putting food service or purchasing portable partitions to create temporary office space in the sales area. Since Institutional Research space in Hoggard Hall will not be finished until after the beginning of the Burney renovation, this office will probably need to move to another temporary location. Library and New Centre were both suggested as potential sites. Mr. Davis and Ms. Farley agreed that a final office relocation plan for the Union renovation project must be completed by January 15, 2003.

Mr. Davis provided copies of facilities project forms and guidelines from several universities. It was decided that the Committee would develop a UNCW form and guidelines from the best components of these distributed documents. Members were asked to review the materials prior to the next meeting and be prepared to report on their findings at the next meeting.

The next Committee meeting is scheduled for December 4, 2002 at 8 AM in Alderman 215.
