University Facilities

Minutes of the September 26, 2001 Meeting

Attending: Beach, Boyd, Dodd, Farley, Fry, Hosier, and Rowell.

The Committee discussed Vice Chancellor Jordan’s memo that outlined activities that are associated with each of the bond funded renovation projects. This detailed memo provided information about the cost associated with each project and the amount available for actual modifications to existing space. Definitions are needed for several of the renovation items listed in the memorandum.

Mr. Fry provided information on the first meeting of the Swing Space Team. Each member of the Team was assigned responsibility for supplying information about his particular area of the construction project.

Committee had a general discussion on the renovation model that Mr. Fry created. Questions were raised about placing the School of Nursing in the swing space facility. The Committee will consider recommending large open office spaces with the use of modular furniture. These types of spaces will save on air conditioning costs and the construction of permanent walls. Using this approach conflicts with the existing campus culture. Director, Assistant/Associate Directors and storage areas should have hard walls. Common conference rooms and break areas should be provided to serve all offices on the first floor.

Questions still remain about the final location of James Hall offices.

The Operations Center at CMS will now be built on property now owned by the University. The Committee recommends that the process of securing an architect for this facility be initiated and that the BOT be prepared to hear the university’s architect recommendations at its January 2002 meeting.

Questions were raised about the use of the College Acres drive house recently purchased by the university. Business Affairs is using currently using this facility to house the division’s new Associate VC.
