Seahawk Territory Alumni Recruitment Team (START)

ABOUT US | PROGRAM GOALS | COLLEGE FAIRS

UNCW’s Seahawk Territory Alumni Recruitment Team (START), helps continue a tradition of academic excellence by encouraging students to apply and attend UNCW, your alma mater.  As a member of START you can help provide the personal attention, encouragement, and UNCW stories that might make the difference between a student choosing UNCW or another university.  This program is successful largely in part because of the alumni perspective, and it is an invaluable element that allows UNCW to continue to surpass our undergraduate enrollment goals.

The UNCW Office of Admissions & Alumni Association is looking for Seahawks to share their own undergraduate or graduate experience while meeting prospective students and families.  If you are interested in attending college fairs, contacting admitted students, and providing information about UNCW to students in your area please sign up below or contact Lauren Scott at (910) 962-7876 or scottc@uncw.edu for more information.

ABOUT US
Who are START members?

Members of the Seahawk Territory Alumni Recruitment Team (START) assist the UNCW Office of Undergraduate Admission in recruiting academically talented students for the University.  Members range from an alumnus of a traditional undergraduate program to parents of those same graduates.  It is the personal Seahawk touch by START that oftentimes encourages a student to visit, apply, and accept an offer of admission.

What are the responsibilities of a START member?

As a START member you are an ambassador for UNCW.  Specific recruitment activities include but are not limited to:

What type of time commitment is required?

START members are asked to participate in a variety of recruitment activities each year.  The average commitment for members is approximately 10 hours each year and is based on the amount of volunteer opportunities in your area.  Most START members will spend a majority their time attending college fairs or area receptions.

While the volunteer opportunities may vary, we encourage you to share your ideas and thoughts on recruitment and become as involved as your time allows.  It is important that all START members are trained and updated on any new UNCW information provided by the Office of Admissions when it becomes available.

PROGRAM GOALS
START (Seahawk Territory Alumni Recruitment Team), is a partnership between UNCW Admissions and the UNCW Alumni Association. START members are alumni interested in assisting the Admissions Office with recruitment efforts in their surrounding areas.

This program should have trained alumni volunteers who will inform prospective students, their families, and guidance counselors about UNCW through selective recruitment activities.  START members will represent UNCW in a positive, professional, and organized way.

START program goals are as follows:

COLLEGE FAIRS
College fairs are programs that introduce high school students and families to a variety of colleges.  Several high schools in one area may sponsor a program or the program might be organized on a state or national level.  The UNCW Office of Admissions receives hundreds of invitations throughout the year to attend such programs.  Unfortunately, UNCW does not have the staff or the resources to be represented at each program, and this is where our START members play a large role.

Most college fairs are held in high school cafeterias, gymnasiums, auditoriums, or even in convention centers.  Tables or booths are assigned for each college in attendance, and anywhere from 20-200 colleges could be participating.  START members are asked to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of a program to get oriented and to set up the UNCW table display.  The UNCW Office of Admissions will provide you with a nametag that should be worn with business attire so that students, families, and college fair representatives can identify you as a member of UNCW’s team.  START members should maintain a professional demeanor; refrain from eating or using a cell phone while behind an admissions table representing UNCW.

While at a college fair START members talk with students and parents, hand out admissions information, and answer any UNCW questions that they can.  You might not always know the answer to a question; always direct a student to contact the UNCW Office of Admissions as a follow up.

For most students the START member might be the only face of UNCW they will see, so please be courteous, friendly, and informative.  The college admissions process can be intimidating and stressful to students or parents, so be sure their interaction with UNCW is as pleasant as possible.

AFTER A COLLEGE FAIR
Once a college fair or school program is over we ask that you complete a breif online evaluation.  These program evaluations let the UNCW Office of Admissions know if it is a program we should continue to participate in, and how many students might have an interest in UNCW from the area.
