I. Alumni News

First pregame social is Jan. 4

The alumni association kicks off the new year with its first pregame social on Saturday, Jan. 4. The Cape Fear Chapter will be recognized at the “wing fling” which begins at 5 p.m. in the Hawk's Nest. Admission is $10 a person, $5 for children six to 12 and free to children five and under. Active alumni who donate $250 or more annually to the association or Wise Alumni House and a guest are admitted for half price. RSVPs required.

Award recognizes young alumni contributions

Dec. 31 is the deadline for nominations for the new Young Alumnus/Alumna of the Year Award that will recognize a young man or woman for outstanding contributions to the university and the community. It is open to individuals who graduated from UNCW between 1992 and 2002. Nominations can be made by writing a letter of recommendation, describing why you think the nominee merits the award and giving examples of the nominee's community involvement, contribution of time, talent and resources to UNCW, professional achievements and leadership ability. Include the nominee's name, address, daytime telephone number and work place. A resume may also be included. Nominations should be sent Tom Lamont, assistant director of alumni relations, Wise Alumni House, 1713 Market Street, Wilmington, N.C. 28403. The winner will be recognized Feb. 7 at Bessie's downtown, when the Young Alumni Council has its Homecoming 2003 gathering.

Board member spotlight

The Office of Alumni Relations and the UNCW Alumni Association spotlight this month with sincere appreciation Tracie J. Chadwick '94, administrative secretary and ex officio board member for the past eight years. Tracie will be leaving the office Jan. 3 to take on the role of graduate secretary in the Office of Biological Sciences. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English which she uses daily in her position. She has been more than her title depicts with alumni relations and the various constituencies. She is a caring and dedicated alumnus, university advocate and friend. Tracie enjoys watching sports, eating "hot wings:with the "right"beverages and being around people about whom she cares. The office and association will miss Tracie and will never forget the many accomplishments made at Wise Alumni House and with the alumni association during her tenure. Best wishes go with Tracie to her new home on campus.

Chapter news

Sandy Saburn, president of the Charlotte Alumni chapter, invites Charlotte area alumni to the chapter's holiday party at 7 p.m. Jan. 3 in the clubhouse at the Gates at Quail Hollow. Those planning to attend should bring an appetizer or dessert, beverage of their choice, gift of $10 or less for the "Dirty Santa" gift exchange and canned food or bagged rice for Loaves and Fishes.

UNCW alumnus is USA Today all star

Linda Strickland Harrelson '82, a first-grade teacher at Codington Elementary School in Wilmington was named to USA Today's fifth annual All-USA Teacher Team.

Commencement is Friday

UNCW will award 955 baccalaureate degrees and 150 graduate degrees at 9:45 a.m., Friday, Dec. 20, in Trask Coliseum.

So, who wants to be chancellor?

Eighty-five people have formally declared their interest in becoming the next chancellor of UNCW. Of this group, 20 percent are sitting presidents or chancellors, 40 percent are sitting provosts, and approximately 20 percent are academic deans, department chairs or academic center directors. Approximately 20 percent are from the non-traditional sector, representing businesses or public service organizations; 20 percent are women and at least 10 percent are minority candidates. The search committee plans to narrow the pool to 35 by the holidays.

Watson School of Education gets top rating

UNCW's Watson School of Education is one of seven undergraduate teacher education programs in the state to receive an exemplary rating, the highest possible, on the Performance Report on Teacher Education Programs for 2001-02.

Fund raiser to establish Leutze Merit Scholars Program

A fundraiser is planned for Jan. 16 to establish the Leutze Merit Scholars Program, honoring the retiring chancellor. Tickets for "An Evening in Honor of James R. Leutze" are $1,000 person or $1,500 a couple. Money raised will fund annual scholarships of $9,000 per person.

Roer appointed Graduate School dean

Robert Roer has been appointed dean of the Graduate School effective Jan. 2. Roer, who has served as interim dean since July 1, earned a Ph.D. in zoology at Duke University. He came to UNCW in 1979 and holds the rank of professor and research physiologist in the Department of Biological Sciences and the Center for Marine Science. During his tenure here he has served as assistant director of CMS and assistant chair for graduate studies. In recognition of his work with graduate students, Roer was one of the two initial recipients of the Graduate Mentor Award in 2000. An active scholar/researcher, he has received almost $3 million in grants, has published over 30 articles, and has given many presentations at national and international seminars and symposia.

Women's basketball a winning team

The Seahawks defeated the Bowling Green Falcons, 72-55, in the championship game of the Radisson Suites Roundball Classic in Boca Raton, Fla., on Dec. 7. On Nov. 30 they overturned Furman 74-56 in the championship game of the Hilton Wilmington Riverside Women’s Basketball Classic Dec. 7 at Trask Coliseum. Their next game is Dec. 20 against Coastal Carolina.

Graduation rate highest in UNC system

UNC Wilmington posted the highest graduation rate for its student-athletes among NCAA Division I public universities in North Carolina for the four-year class average, according to the annual graduation rates report released by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). UNCW paced the UNC system in four-year class averages at 74 percent, followed by UNC Asheville at 67 percent and UNC Greensboro at 53 percent. UNC Wilmington posted the highest graduation rate for its student-athletes among NCAA Division I public universities in North Carolina for the four-year class average, according to the annual graduation rates report released by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Blizzard is "Player to Watch"

Senior guard Brett Blizzard was singled out as a “Player to Watch” by the administrators of the Senior CLASS Award. The award is presented each year to the nation's senior Player of the Year in NCAA Division I men's basketball.

Seahawk Club surpasses goal

For the second straight year, the Seahawk Club, the primary fund-raising organization for UNCW athletics, has set a record for contributions by attracting $1.3 million. Overall, volunteers signed up 417 new members and surpassed last year's totals for unrestricted monies. The Seahawk Club singled out Larry Knowles as its Fundraiser of the Year and Tom Peterson '00 as Rookie Fundraiser of the Year and the CAA Champs 2003 team headed up by Mike Byers '88 as team champion. The teams and their respective leaders included: CAA Champs 2003, Knowles; Final Four, Greg Dalton '74, Head Hawks, Bill Rudisill; Hunkerdowns, Gene Palmer; Sweet Sixteen, Jim Ballentine; and the Visionaries, Chris Glendenning '88.
