ALUMNI GIVING ON THE RISE
The mercury is rising as alumni giving increases to meet the chancellor’s goal of 10 percent by June 30. As of Jan. 31, 2,172 alumni had made a gift to their alma mater (that’s 6.37%). We need a total of 3,718 donors to reach our goal, and only YOU can help us do that. All men and women who attended or graduated from Wilmington College or the University of North Carolina at Wilmington between 1946 and 2003 are invited to become involved. A gift of $25 or more to UNCW each fiscal year (between July 1-June 30) gives you status as an “active alumnus.” Your contribution supports the many programs provided to alumni and students. Joseph L. King III ’66 and Louise Floyd Gorham ’59 were honored by the UNCW Alumni Association during Homecoming 2004 festivities. King received the 2004 Distinguished Alumnus Award, and Gorham received the 2004 Distinguished Citizen for Service to the Community and University Award. MORE

TREXLER WINS CAR; SCHOLARSHIP NAMED FOR KING
Melanie Trexler ’83, a Wilmington CPA, was the winner of the 2003 Seahawk VW Beetle that was raffled off to raise money for alumni merit scholarships. To her delight, it was a hit with her entire family which includes a daughter, two sons and her husband. Melanie chose to keep the Beetle and, with a beaming smile, drove it off Bob King’s VW lot. Thus far, $41,190 has been brought in from raffle ticket sales and donations. Bob King ‘66 is known throughout the region as a very generous donor to UNCW with his most recent gift being the VW. The UNCW Alumni Association voted unanimously to name the alumni merit scholarship in his honor. Students who win this prestigious scholarship will be known as Bob King Alumni Scholars.

ASSOCIATION INTRODUCES CHANCELLOR AROUND SE NORTH CAROLINA
This spring, the UNCW Alumni Association is traveling throughout southeastern North Carolina introducing Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo to alumni, business and government leaders, civic organizations and school administrators. Chancellor DePaolo has a commitment to visiting communities to talk about education's role in economic development and how UNCW can help the area. The chancellor’s schedule is as follows: Tuesday, March 23 - Duplin County; Wednesday, March 24 - Bladen County; Tuesday, April 6 - Craven County and Wednesday, April 7 - Onslow County.

ALUMNI BOARD SPOTLIGHT
Becky Fancher ‘78 personifies the definition of key volunteer. She gives valuable service to many areas of the UNCW Alumni Association on her own good will and personal initiative. Becky ably served as chair of the Watson School of Education Alumni Chapter in 1997-98, as chair of the association in 2000-01 and is currently secretary of the Past Chairs’ Council. Becky’s chairmanship was highlighted by the major restructuring of the board’s committees to streamline their efficiency. Alumni giving had its peak in 2000 rising to 14.7 percent. Becky is the assistant registrar at UNCW and enjoys working with students, faculty and staff. Becky is married to Jack, and they just celebrated their silver anniversary. They are the proud parents of Katie, who will graduate in May from UNCW with a B.S. in business accountancy and is continuing her studies toward a B.A. in middle grades education. Becky and Jack enjoy NASCAR racing, both watching and driving, and working in their vegetable garden. Becky is an avid reader and Seahawk fan. Thank you Becky and your family for your total support of UNCW!

LAST BASKETBALL SOCIAL OF THE SEASON
The last social of the year for men’s basketball will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 in the Hawk’s Nest, immediately following the game against Hofstra. (It’s Senior Night.) Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo will speak, Jason Wheeler ’99, ’03M will be recognized as Young Alumnus of the Year, and the Young Alumni Council leadership will be honored for their volunteerism. CELEBRATION FOR LEAD FLOOR ALUMNI
The UNC Center for Leadership Education and Service, in conjunction with Housing and Residence Life, is hosting the fifth anniversary LEAD Floor celebration at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 2 in the Graham/Hewlett great room. BOARD TO DISCUSS MISSION/VISION
On Saturday, Feb. 28 the UNCW Alumni Association Board of Directors will meet to revise the association’s mission and vision statement and to begin strategic planning for the future of the association. Work will begin at 9 a.m. at Wise Alumni House with a continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m. All board members are encouraged to attend this important meeting. COMMUNITY TASK FORCE FORMED
Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo and Wilmington Mayor Spence Broadhurst established an innovative City of Wilmington, UNCW and community task force. The task force will examine a variety of quality of life issues related to UNCW’s impact on city neighborhoods and make recommendations to the university and the City Council to develop partnerships and shared responsibility for managing these issues. PLANNING COUNCIL SEEKS FEEDBACK
ON PROPOSED UNCW VISION AND VALUES
The University Planning Council has proposed a strategic vision, identity and core values for UNCW and seeks input from the university community. Alumni can forward their comments to the UNCW Alumni Relations Office. The strategic vision sets forth an ideal future for the university and provides long-term direction and an inspirational foundation for strategic planning. The identity statement concisely describes UNCW’s distinguishing characteristics -”who we are and how we are different.” The core values are enduring beliefs and principles that are commonly held and endeavor to put into action. Core values guide faculty, staff, administrators and (sometimes) students in performing their work. MORE

RARE WHALE STUDIED AT UNCW
A rare dense beaked whale, also known as Blainville’s whale, is being studied by scientists and students at UNCW. The 14-foot adult male whale, discovered near Kure Beach, was moved to the university by UNCW’s Marine Mammal Stranding Program. MORE

AQUARIUS LAUNCHES CONTEST FOR STUDENTS
Students in grades 8-12 who dream of diving in the world’s oceans now have the opportunity to enter a contest to win a trip to Key Largo, Fla., SCUBA certification and a personal tour inside Aquarius, America’s inner space station. The trip will include the student’s teacher and parents. MORE

Sophomore forward Taylor Lay poured in a career high 21 points, and UNCW broke open a close game with a 13-0 run late in the second half for a 64-51 victory over Towson in Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball on Feb. 11. MORE

SOFTBALL KICKS OFF SEASON SATURDAY IN RALEIGH
The UNC Wilmington softball team begins its most ambitious schedule in years when the Seahawks compete this weekend in the Triangle Classic at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh, N.C. The Seahawks will be joined by 19 other teams, including Colonial Athletic Association opponent James Madison, in the three-day event that runs through Saturday, Feb. 14. MORE

UNCW hosts nationally ranked UNC Greensboro, at 2 p.m. Feb. 14. Head Coach Mark Scalf and his 2004 Seahawks met the media Jan. 28 at Brooks Field. The Seahawks return 21 letter winners including All-CAA designated hitter Chip Grawey, outfielder Matt Sutton and closer Blake Cross. MORE
