MARK YOUR CALENDAR
The UNCW Alumni Association will celebrate Homecoming Feb. 4-6, 2005. Planned events include the annual awards dinner on Friday, Feb. 4 and a pregame social at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5 in the Hawk’s Nest. The UNCW Seahawks play Old Dominion University at 4 p.m. in Trask Coliseum. Alumni board chair Ed Vosnock ’71 will crown the Homecoming queen at half-time. On Sunday, Feb. 6 the Lady Seahawks play Delaware at 2 p.m. in Trask Coliseum. NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR ALUMNI AWARDS
Do you know someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and the community? The UNCW Alumni Association is seeking nominations of such individuals for its annual awards program. Two awards will be presented Feb. 5 at a formal dinner Homecoming Weekend in the Warwick Center ballroom. MORE

Jenean Todd

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
The alumni association spotlight shines on Jenean Todd. She was elected to the board of directors in 2003, and was named chair of the Alumni Development Committee in 2004. Jenean is the exhibit manager for Cape Fear Museum of History and Science. She attended UNCW, NCSU and The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. In addition to her dedication to the alumni association, she volunteers for Cape Fear Shag Club, the American Red Cross, Echo Farms Swim Team and Water of Life Lutheran Church. Jenean is married to Ken Todd and is the mother of three: Collin, Griffin and Huston. She enjoys calligraphy, reading and traveling. In her spare time she is president of Confidence Realty Inc.

HOSIER NAMED PROVOST
Paul Hosier, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, has been named provost. He had been serving as interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs since June 2002. MORE

MONITORING PROGRAM GETS $25 MILLION FROM NOAA
UNCW’s Coastal Ocean Research and Monitoring Program was awarded $2.5 million from NOAA, among the largest research awards ever received by UNCW. This funding will upgrade, enhance and expand onshore and offshore oceanographic and marine meteorological instruments that will ultimately extend from South Carolina to north of Cape Lookout, N.C. HR WINS NATIOANAL AWARD FOR SOFTWARE
The UNCW Office of Human Resources received the 2004 SunGard SCT Technology Award at the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources in Salt Lake City, Utah. UNCW was recognized for developing a software program, originally called HRsearch, now known as Consensus™, that facilitates employment searches, particularly in an academic setting where large search committees are the norm. Montford Point MarinesUNCW DOCUMENTARY EXAMINES EXPERIENCES OF FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN MARINES
In a race against time, the largely untold story of the nation’s first African-American Marines will at last be made known through a broadcast quality video documentary. More than 20,000 African-Americans trained in segregated facilities between 1942 and 1949 at Montford Point, N.C., and became the first African-Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps. Patricia Kelley

KELLEY NAMED AAAS FELLOW
Patricia Kelley, professor of earth sciences, was elected to the rank of fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Fellows are AAAS members whose “efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished.” Her letter states that she is “…being honored for outstanding contributions to the study of predator-prey interactions in the fossil record and for contributions to public awareness of paleontology.” She will receive her certificate and rosette during an induction ceremony at the annual meeting of AAAS, Feb. 19 in Washington, D.C.

MIDNIGHT MADNESS UNDERWAY
A weeklong series of events, highlighted by the start of men’s and women’s basketball practice for the 2004-05 season, continues UNCW’s tradition of Midnite Madness. The annual “Fan Jam” will kick off at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15 in the Hanover Hall parking area. The festivities include a live performance by the band, 4th and Dock, inflatable games and contests. At 10:30 p.m. the doors to Trask Coliseum will open, signaling the start to Midnite Madness. MORE

MEN’S BASKETBALL 2004-05 HOOPS SCHEDULE
Four home non-conference games and a first-ever appearance at UNC Chapel Hill’s Dean E. Smith Center highlight the 2004-05 men’s basketball schedule at UNC Wilmington. MORE

STRONG FIELD SET FOR LANDFALL TRADITION
Two-time men’s champion Minnesota and women’s titlist New Mexico return to defend their golf crowns when the third edition of The Landfall Tradition gets under way later this month at the Country Club of Landfall’s Jack Nicklaus course. The 54-hole event runs Oct. 29-31 and includes 12 of the nation’s premier men’s and women’s collegiate teams. The 24 teams will play a practice round on Thursday, Oct. 28, with the first-round beginning at 7:50 a.m. (men) and 8:44 a.m. (women) on Friday, Oct. 29. MORE

SWIM TEAM INVESTIGATION CONCLUDED
The second investigation into an April incident involving the UNCW women’s swim team produced no new facts, but the punishment placed on the program has been lightened. Provost Paul Hosier announced during a Sept. 29 news conference that his findings were consistent with the original investigation conducted by the Division of Student Affairs during the summer. His report also confirmed that some of the team’s activities during an “initiation week” were in violation of the school’s policy on hazing. Read the report. Read the Wilmington Star-News article.

SEAHAWK TV SHOW AIRING DAILY ON TIME WARNER
The Seahawks have hit the small screen with “The Seahawk Sports Roundup,” a new television show featuring UNCW’s sports teams, head coaches and athletic administrators, that airs daily on Time Warner Cable’s The Learning Network (Channel 5). The 37-minute show is a combined venture of the UNCW Athletic Department and UNCW-TV. MORE
