The Cape Fear Alumni Chapter hosts its seventh annual Grand
Slam Jam baseball pregame cookout at 6 p.m. Friday, April
29 at Brooks Field. At 7 p.m. alumni will cheer the UNCW baseball
team as they take on the James Madison Dukes. Download

The African American Graduate Association and the Office of
Campus Diversity will sponsor Senior Sankofa for graduating
African American students at 1 p.m. Friday, May 6 at Wise

Volunteers are needed to assist with the two spring commencements
Saturday, May 7 in Trask Coliseum: College of Arts and Sciences
from 8 a.m. to noon and the professional schools (School of
Nursing, Cameron School of Business and Watson School of Education)
from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided for volunteers
who assist with both ceremonies. Duties include passing out
programs, directing guests and taking tickets; dress is business
casual. Interested alumni are asked to send e-mail to alumni@uncw.edu.
UNCW needs your help to reach its 2004-05 alumni giving goal
which is 12 percent. All gifts, whether $1 or $1,000 or more,
make an important difference on campus because they show alumni
care about their alma mater. Corporations and foundations
look at alumni giving percentages when evaluating grant requests,
and U.S.News and World Report factors the percentage into
its statistical formula when ranking universities. All men
and women who attended or graduated from Wilmington College
or UNCW between 1946 and 2004 are invited to participate in
helping us reach our goal. A gift of $25 or more to UNCW each
fiscal year (between July 1 and June 30) gives you status
as an “active alumnus.” We appreciate the gifts
and pledges we’ve received from our alumni, parents,

S. Scharf, assistant professor in the Department of Biological
Sciences, received the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools’

Mike White, associate professor in the creative writing department,
won the Vassar Miller Prize for his third volume of poetry,

Bob King ’66, Wendy Murphy, Linda Pearce and George
Teague were appointed by the UNC Board of Governors to serve
on the UNCW Board of Trustees. Charles Evans was re-elected
by the BOG to a second four-year term. Murphy was appointed
to serve the remainder of the unexpired term of trustee Linda
Upperman Smith who resigned, effective Feb. 26. She will be
eligible for re-election when that term expires June 30, 2007.

UNCW is ranked in the top 25 in the nation for the production
of American Chemical Society-certified bachelor of science
chemistry graduates. This puts UNCW’s ranking in the
top four percent of 664 accredited programs in the U.S. for
the production of the ACS-certified chemistry graduates. MORE
The potential for devastating tsunamis in the northern Caribbean
is high, say Nancy Grindlay and Meghan Hearne of UNCW and
Paul Mann of the University of Texas Austin, based on their
analysis of historical data since the arrival of Christopher
Columbus. Several natural phenomena could trigger giant tsunamis
with effects felt in the islands of the Greater and Lesser
Antilles and along the east and Gulf coasts of the United

The search for a new athletic director at UNCW has been narrowed
to three candidates: Mike Cross, senior associate director
of athletics for intercollegiate programming at Princeton
University; Michael Capaccio, interim director of athletics
at UNCW; and John Suarez, director of athletics at Long Island
University. Open forums have been scheduled on campus with
candidates: Cross on Friday, April 15; Capaccio from 8:30
to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, in the Golden Hawk Room;
and Suarez from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 22 in the
University Union Glassroom.
Led by senior standouts Brian Joyce and Becky Berzonski, UNCW
will be among the favorites when the CAA Men’s and Women’s
Golf Championships are held Friday, April 15, through Sunday,
April 17 at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. MORE
Junior point guard John Goldsberry was named to the 2004-05
N.C. Collegiate Sports Information Association University
Division men’s basketball team. He was named to the
first-team after leading the Seahawks in scoring (12.1) and
topping the CAA in 3-point field goal accuracy (.434) and
steals per game (2.0) this season. He was named CAA Defensive
Player of the Year, First-Team All-CAA, All-Defensive First-Team
and All-Academic team. MORE
Junior Michael Krayer, a double major in marine biology and
chemistry, was named the CAA’s top scholar athlete in
men’s swimming and diving for the 2004-05 season. The
Hattersheim, Germany, native has compiled a 3.93 grade point
average, and he recently sparked the Seahawks to their fourth
consecutive CAA championship. MORE
Although UNCW baseball senior pitcher Zach Kimball has easily
adjusted to life 3,000 miles away from his hometown of Shoreline,
Wash., he remains a Seattle fan at heart. The southpaw has
been one of the key cogs in UNCW's rotation over the last
two seasons, hurling 158.1 innings as the Seahawks have compiled
a 64-35 record in that span. He will lead UNCW as Coach Mark
Scalf's team looks to build on its 9-0 conference record when
the Seahawks open a three-game series with Delaware at 7 p.m.
