Six North Carolina leaders were honored at the 13th Annual
Razor Walker
Awards ceremony May 2. The awards recognize the efforts
and commitment of individuals who have improved the lives
of and educational opportunities for North Carolina’s
children and youth. MORE
The Bernard Osher Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant
to UNCW for its lifelong learning and continuing studies program,
which will be called the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning
at UNCW. With the grant, the university will enhance the program’s
outreach into communities across southeastern North Carolina.

WILLISTON ALUMNI ENDOW SCHOLARSHIP
With a gift of more than $35,000 raised to date under the
auspices of the annual Stompin’ at the Savoy fund-raising
dance, UNCW established the Williston Senior High School Alumni
Endowed Scholarship as a legacy to allow descendants of graduates
of the former African-American high school to attend UNCW.

CULTURAL ARTS DIRECTOR NAMED
Norman Bemelmans, director of Kenan Auditorium since 2001,
was named director of cultural arts, a newly created position.

Ground was broken April 28 for a new student housing project.
The complex will have six three-story apartment buildings
which will provide 524 upperclassmen with housing in a combination
of two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments. MORE
UNCW students and additional funding equal success for this
year’s phonathon. More than 30 UNCW students made connections
with alumni, parents and friends and set a new fund-raising
record for the phonathon with more than $300,000 in pledges
from 6,171 individuals. The university has received 2,083
pledges for a total of $99,784 from alumni who have never
given to UNCW in the past. Parents continue to be among the
most generous among UNCW’s peer institutions with over
$124,000 in pledges. If you have contributed to UNCW this
year, our students, faculty and staff sincerely appreciate
your support. If you have not yet given, please consider sending
your contribution before the fiscal year ends on June 30.

Mike Capaccio, who has served as UNC Wilmington’s
athletic director on an interim basis for the last seven months,
was elevated to the full-time post May 10 by Chancellor Rosemary
DePaolo. MORE
The men's golf team will be the 21st seed in the East Regional
as the selections for the 2005 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships
were announced Monday, May 9. The Seahawks, making their third
consecutive NCAA regional appearance, will compete at the
Golf Club of Tennessee May 19-21. MORE
UNC Wilmington matched its opening round score of 306 and
wound up 15th as the NCAA Women’s Golf East Regionals
wrapped up Saturday at Florida’s University Golf Course.

Freshman swimmer Allie Lewis and junior diver Dean Berman
were honored by the CAA for their performances during the
recently completed men’s and women’s swimming

Junior utility specialist Jennifer Bosley collected First-Team
All-Conference honors and five other UNC Wilmington softball
players were also recognized at the CAA’s post-season
banquet May 11 in Hempstead, N.Y. MORE
Jerry Wainwright, who led UNC Wilmington to its first post-season
berth, NCAA Tournament appearance and NCAA victory, has been
named head men’s basketball coach at DePaul University.
