ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI RELATIONS APPOINTED
Todd Olesiuk ‘99 is the new assistant director of alumni relations. He will coordinate educational, service and social activities for the UNCW Alumni Association, which has nearly 40,000 members. Before accepting the position at UNCW, Olesiuk was an investment consultant in Atlanta, where he helped organize the Atlanta Alumni Chapter. Another permanent addition to the alumni relations staff is Charlenne Figgins ’04, program assistant. Prior to UNCW, she worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Wilmington.

TRIANGLE CHAPTER HOSTS DURHAM BULLS OUTING
The Triangle Alumni Chapter hosts its annual outing with the Durham Bulls on Sunday, June 12. A pregame cookout will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tickets are $19 for active alumni and $24 for inactive alumni and include admission to the cookout and the game. The Cape Fear Alumni Chapter has a van available for Wilmington area alumni interested in traveling to Durham for the game; round-trip van tickets are $11 a person. Registration forms for the event can be downloaded. Contact Charlenne Figgins at 800.596.2880 or 962.2682 to purchase tickets or reserve a seat in the van. CAPE FEAR CHAPTER HOSTS SOCIAL AT THE BEACH
The Cape Fear Alumni Chapter will host a social at 7 p.m. Friday, June 17, at King Neptune restaurant, Wrightsville Beach. Members will discuss the Cape Fear Alumni Golf Classic planned for October. WATSON SCHOOL CHAPTER NAMES SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
The WSE Alumni Chapter presented two academic scholarships to outstanding students who represent the traditions of academic excellence in the Watson School of Education. The 2005 recipients of a $500 scholarship are Dory Stanfill and Dawn Allen. The chapter presented the Distinguished Alumni Award to Steven J. Baldwin '97 for significant contributions to education. He has been a sixth grade social studies teacher since 1998 and currently teaches at Brawley Middle School in Mooresville where he was named Teacher of the Year in 2004.

RAZOR WALKER AWARD WINNERS NAMED
Six North Carolina leaders were honored at the 13th Annual Razor Walker Awards ceremony May 2. The awards recognize the efforts and commitment of individuals who have improved the lives of and educational opportunities for North Carolina’s children and youth. MORE

LIFELONG LEARNING PROGRAM TO EXPAND OUTREACH
The Bernard Osher Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant to UNCW for its lifelong learning and continuing studies program, which will be called the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning at UNCW. With the grant, the university will enhance the program’s outreach into communities across southeastern North Carolina. MORE

WILLISTON ALUMNI ENDOW SCHOLARSHIP
With a gift of more than $35,000 raised to date under the auspices of the annual Stompin’ at the Savoy fund-raising dance, UNCW established the Williston Senior High School Alumni Endowed Scholarship as a legacy to allow descendants of graduates of the former African-American high school to attend UNCW. CULTURAL ARTS DIRECTOR NAMED
Norman Bemelmans, director of Kenan Auditorium since 2001, was named director of cultural arts, a newly created position. MORE

NEW STUDENT HOUSING UNDERWAY
Ground was broken April 28 for a new student housing project. The complex will have six three-story apartment buildings which will provide 524 upperclassmen with housing in a combination of two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments. MORE

RECORD NUMBERS REACHED BY ANNUAL FUND PHONATHON
UNCW students and additional funding equal success for this year’s phonathon. More than 30 UNCW students made connections with alumni, parents and friends and set a new fund-raising record for the phonathon with more than $300,000 in pledges from 6,171 individuals. The university has received 2,083 pledges for a total of $99,784 from alumni who have never given to UNCW in the past. Parents continue to be among the most generous among UNCW’s peer institutions with over $124,000 in pledges. If you have contributed to UNCW this year, our students, faculty and staff sincerely appreciate your support. If you have not yet given, please consider sending your contribution before the fiscal year ends on June 30. Thank you for all that you do for UNCW.

SEAHAWK GOLFERS TO PLAY IN NCAA EAST REGIONAL
The men's golf team will be the 21st seed in the East Regional as the selections for the 2005 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships were announced Monday, May 9. The Seahawks, making their third consecutive NCAA regional appearance, will compete at the Golf Club of Tennessee May 19-21. MORE

LADY SEAHAWKS FINISH 15TH AT NCAA REGIONALS
UNC Wilmington matched its opening round score of 306 and wound up 15th as the NCAA Women’s Golf East Regionals wrapped up Saturday at Florida’s University Golf Course. MORE

Freshman swimmer Allie Lewis and junior diver Dean Berman were honored by the CAA for their performances during the recently completed men’s and women’s swimming season. MORE

Junior utility specialist Jennifer Bosley collected First-Team All-Conference honors and five other UNC Wilmington softball players were also recognized at the CAA’s post-season banquet May 11 in Hempstead, N.Y. MORE

FORMER SEAHAWK SKIPPER ACCEPTS DEPAUL JOB
Jerry Wainwright, who led UNC Wilmington to its first post-season berth, NCAA Tournament appearance and NCAA victory, has been named head men’s basketball coach at DePaul University. MORE
