OVER 100 ALUMNI AND FRIENDS GATHER FOR TAILGATE PARTY
Over 100 alumni and friends gathered for fun and food before the Jo Dee Messina Concert on Sept. 24. The Alumni Relations Office is planning more get-togethers at future events. MORE

GOLF CLASSIC RESCHEDULED FOR NOV. 7
The Cape Fear Alumni Chapter will sponsor a golf tournament to benefit the UNCW Alumni Association on Monday, Nov. 7 at Echo Farms Country Club. The event was rescheduled from Oct. 7 due to inclement weather. Team sponsorships are $350 and include 18 holes of golf, cart and practice balls; gift bag (including a UNCW alumni T-shirt); bagged lunch provided by Chick-fil-A; beverages; social hour and awards dinner cookout. Corporate sponsorships are available for $1,000. Bagged lunches and beverages will be provided. The deadline for entries is Nov. 3. Entries must be accompanied by payment. AMERICAN HOME MORTGAGE AGREEMENT BENEFITS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
American Home Mortgage, one of the nation’s leading mortgage lenders, and the UNCW Alumni Association, are offering the “Seahawk Reward Program,” in which alumni would will receive a $200 closing cost credit and $100 will be donated in their name by AHM to the UNCW Alumni Association. MORE

ALUMNI RELATIONS SOCIALS AND EVENTS FOR AWAY GAMES
Alumni relations staff will be traveling to away men’s basketball games to coordinate alumni socials and fan support: Nov. 17, when the Seahawks take on the Colorado Buffalos in Boulder, and Dec. 12, when the Seahawks play the Wisconsin Badgers. MORE

The CrucibleDINNER AND THEATER WITH THE CRUCIBLE
The alumni association will hold a Thanksgiving Feast at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Madeline Suite before the performance of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m., then guests will move to Kenan Auditorium for the performance. Cost is $25 for active alumni and $30 for all others. Reservations, due by noon Nov. 16, can be made online or by calling 910.962.2682.

PARKING DECK PLANS POSTPONED
Because of the escalating cost of construction and the subsequent impact on parking fees, University of North Carolina Wilmington has postponed plans for a new parking deck. UNCW has been exploring different options to meet the need for additional parking including the pending purchases of new property. These properties have the potential to create nearly 600 parking spaces, virtually the same number that would have been provided by the deck, which was slated for completion in 2007. MORE

$1.3 MILLION GRANT FOR MARINE BIOTECH RESEARCH
National Institute of General Medical Sciences has awarded a $1.3 million marine biotechnology grant to University of North Carolina Wilmington. The three-year, $1.3 million grant will be used to develop 100 new chemical structures from cultured marine microalga only available at the UNCW Center for Marine Science. MORE

BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETS
The regular quarterly committee meetings of the UNCW Board of Trustees will take place Thursday, Oct. 27 and Friday, Oct. 28. MORE

Midnite madnessMEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON WITH MIDNITE MADNESS
The 2005-06 edition of the UNC Wilmington men's basketball team officially kicked off its new season Friday night with Midnite Madness (see photo gallery) and makes its first public appearance Saturday, Nov. 5, with an exhibition matchup against Mount Olive. MORE

SEAHAWK SPORTS ROUNDUP BEGINS SECOND SEASON
“The Seahawk Sports Roundup,” a television show featuring UNC Wilmington’s athletic department, has started its second season on Time Warner Cable’s The Learning Network (Channel 5). The show is a joint venture of the athletic department and UNCW-TV. The first of four episodes will run the next three weeks on TLN. MORE

Marissa MurtaughMURTAUGH NAMED UNCW ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Freshman Marissa Murtaugh collected Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this fall after finishing third out of 124 runners in Appalachian State’s Blue Ridge Open. She clocked 18:26.9 on the 5K course at State Farm Fields, finishing behind only Davidson’s Brenna Burns and Allie Martin. MORE

SEAHAWK CLUB HOLDS HALLOWEEN BASH
The Seahawk Club, in conjunction with Cape Fear Community College, presents the Halloween Bash. The bash will be from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday, Oct. 28 at the Schwartz Center on the CFCC campus. Tickets are $25 and include unlimited food and beverages, dancing and live entertainment. All proceeds benefit student scholarships at UNCW and CFCC. Support UNCW – The UNCW Annual Fund Phonathon is underway. Last year, the phonathon took in a total of 4,380 pledges amounting to $224,478.42. Money raised from the phonathon went to more than 55 different programs and organizations on campus. An effective way for the university to raise funds and maintain connections with alumni and friends, the phonathon will run during both the fall and spring semesters. Students will call graduates of all the academic areas, UNCW parents and UNCW friends.

KING MACKEREL TOURNAMENT RESCHEDULED
King MackerelThe Wrightsville Beach King Mackerel Tournament takes place Oct. 27-29 at the Wrightsville Beach Marina. For the fifth straight year, proceeds will benefit the Seahawk Club, which provides scholarships for UNCW’s student-athletes and the Lion’s Club. MORE

The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra will perform Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29. Tickets are $20 for first reserved seating, $18 for second reserved, $4 for youth under 17 and free for UNCW students with valid ID. MORE

Tami Tango TrioThe Tami Tango Trio will perform a selection of tangos, milongas and valses from their new CD Milonguero Viejo at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25. Admission is free.

The Moviemakers and Scholars Series presents "The World of African Film and Filmmakers" from 6:30 to 9:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, in Bryan Auditorium, Room 100. Samba Gadjigo is the featured speaker.

Zsuzsa CsergoZsuzsa Csergo, political scientist at the George Washington University, will present "What Europe's New Democracies Can Teach Us: Lessons in Cultural Division and Integration" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 in the Warwick Center Ballroom. MORE

Jane Elliott, the adaptor of the landmark “Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes” discrimination experiment, explores the problems of racism and the responsibility individuals have for eliminating it at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24 in Kenan Auditorium. MORE
