AAGA TO MEET MARCH 29

Dress for SuccessALUMNI FEATURED AT COM STUDIES DAY

Communication Studies Day will be held Friday, March 28, and feature alumni panel discussions at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in Leutze Hall. Participants include Joy C. Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo will join the Wilmington College Alumni Chapter during its monthly luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 19 at Jackson’s Big Oak Barbecue. All Wilmington College graduates are invited to attend.


RECREATION MAJORS CELEBRATE

Herbert P. McKim Jr. ’85M, David S. Congdon ’78 and David L. Cole ’72 are the 2008 Cameron School of Alumni of Year and were recognized during the annual Business Week alumni mixer in February.

RENOVATED UNION OPENS
Staff moved from modular buildings into the renovated University Union over spring break, and students were greeted with an expansive new Hawk's Nest featuring more than a half dozen dining options. The grand re-opening of the Union and Burney Center will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 27 in the north porch area of the renovated Union. Rain site is inside the Burney Center.

UNCW IN THE NEWSDonald Kohn
UNCW received international media coverage in February when Federal Reserve vice chair Donald Kohn spoke as part of the Cameron School of Business annual Business Week observance. Speaking the day before Fed chair Ben Bernanke addressed Congress, Kohn said the Fed would likely again lower interest rates to try to keep the economy from worsening. His comments were picked up by Reuters, Forbes, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg among dozens of other media outlets.

SATURDAY SCIENCE ADVENTURES FOR KIDS
Hands-on science experience is now available to children throughout the year with MarineQuest's Saturday Morning Marine Explorers. The program offers 6- to 9-year-olds themed marine adventures on Saturdays. For $12 per child, each 9 a.m. to noon session will feature a different creature, laboratory activity and exploration of a local marine habitat and mini-tour of the UNCW Center for Marine Science.

PPD FOUNDER FUNDS ACADEMIC CENTER
The UNCW Department of Athletics received a $1 million gift from Fred Eshelman to support construction of a new academic center for student-athletes. The funds will help the athletics department initiate plans for the building, which will house a computer lab, academic and study spaces, tutoring area, locker rooms and offices.

SEAHAWKS HONORED FOR OUTSTANDING SEASON
Senior forward Todd Hendley was named recipient of the prestigious Dean Ehlers Leadership Award at the Colonial Athletic Association’s men’s basketball banquet March 6 in Richmond. T.J. Carter was named First-Team All-CAA, Vladimir Kuljanin nabbed Second-Team honors, Chad Tomko collected All-Rookie laurels and Darion Jeralds was honored on the All-Academic team. Women's CAA honorees

BLACKWELL LEADS TRIO OF HONOREES
Freshman forward Brittany Blackwell was tabbed the CAA’s Rookie of the Year to headline UNCW award winners at the league’s women’s basketball awards banquet March 12. Blackwell also garnered Second Team and All-Rookie Team accolades while junior forward Sahsha Taylor was a Third Team selection. Senior guard Stephanie Fernald was recognized for her efforts off the court as she was named to the All-Academic Team.

SEAHAWKS FALL TO GEORGE MASON
Third-seeded George Mason capitalized on No. 2 UNCW’s poorest shooting performance of the season to advance to the finals of the 2008 CAA Men’s Basketball Championship with a 53-41 victory over the Seahawks March 9 at the Richmond Coliseum. The Seahawks, who knocked off GMU twice during the regular campaign by a combined five points, couldn't find the magic this time around, converting a season-low 28.1 percent of their shots to fall to 20-13. The Patriots, meanwhile, moved on to their ninth CAA title game, playing upstart William & Mary Monday night for the league’s automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. BASEBALL TEAM ON WINNING STREAK
Freshman relievers Cameron Roth and Stephen Harrold recorded saves as UNCW swept Hofstra, 6-3 and 5-4, in a CAA doubleheader March 15 at University Field. The Seahawks, who swept their third doubleheader of the season, extended their winning streak to 12 straight and improved their record to 13-4 overall and 6-0 in the circuit.

Carmen Perez-NarbonGOLFER HEADS TO LPGA EVENT
Sophomore golfer Carmen Perez-Narbon, the reigning CAA Player of the Year, will forgo UNCW's scheduled appearance in the LSU-Cleveland Classic to play in the LPGA MasterCard Classic March 14-16 in Mexico City. She was invited to compete in the professional event with a sponsor exemption after winning the Mexican Women’s National Amateur Championship in early January with a three-round total of 75-66-77. She becomes the first Seahawk player to compete in an LPGA event while still in school.
