The UNCW Department of Anthropology and The Watson School of  Education  are pleased to announce:

 Licensure to Teach Social Studies (9-12)
(Anthropology Majors)


ANT 206              Cultural Anthropology

ANT 210              Physical Anthropology

ANT 207              Archaeology

ANTL 207            Archaeological Laboratory

ANT 450              History of Anthropological Theory            

18 semester hours from the three subfields (300-400 level) with a minimum of 6 hours from each subfield:

              Archaeology:  ANT 307, 308, 310, 311, 315, 411, 412, 435, 440, 455

              Biological/Physical:  ANT 320, 322, 324, 326, 426, 430

              Cultural:  ANT 301, 303, 304, 305, 309, 317, 387, 445

Electives:  6 hours* distributed as follows:

              *Any 200, 300, or 400 level anthropology course: 3-6 hours

              *Linguistics: 0-3 hours. ANT 208; ENG 320, 322

Anthropology majors who wish to be licensed in social studies must complete the teacher education program and a minimum of 21 collateral hours to include HST 101, 102, 103, and either HST 201 or 202; and PLS 101, and at least 1 course in each of the following areas:  economics (ECON 125 is strongly recommended), and geography.

In addition to the requirements for the academic major, the Psychology and Education courses listed below are required for licensure. A grade of “C” or better must be earned in the following courses:

PSY 223             Lifespan Human Development

EDN 200             Teacher, School and Society

EDNL 200           Field Studies

EDN 203             Psychological Foundations of Teaching

EDN 301             Instructional Design and Evaluation

EDN 303             Instructional Technology

Note: The courses listed below require admission to the Watson School of Education.

EDN 321             Meeting Needs of Special Students in High School

EDN 356             Reading in the Secondary School

EDN 405             Theory and Practice in Teaching Social Studies

EDNL405            Field  Experience in Social Studies

EDN 402             Classroom Management in Secondary Schools

EDN 408             Instructional Seminar

EDN 409             Practicum
