Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Carlton
Wilkinson is an art photographer who performs this artwork as an extension
of his passion for the human experience. Growing up in a family who
valued the pursuit of intellectual freedom and humanity, his work
often communicates those ideals. His photographic series, On the
Altar of Liberty, traces the history of the American Civil Rights
Movement (1954 –1968). For over 25 years Wilkinson has chronicled
the lives of males from the African Diaspora, entitled, The African
Male Museum. In 1994, he received the Tennessee Artist Fellowship,
which is the state’s highest honor for an artist.
Wilkinson has exhibited his photography nationally, including, the
Smithsonian Institution, the University of Notre Dame, Vanderbilt
University, University of Berkeley, California and several private
and public art galleries. His photography is included in several collections
that include AT&T, The Schomburg Center (NY), University of California,
Los Angeles and Governor Phil Bredesen (TN) and former U.S. Senator
Bill Frist (TN).
Wilkinson’s photography was been included in a traveling exhibition
and book, Reflections in Black. His 25th year retrospective,
Coming Home, was exhibited at the Parthenon Museum in 2005.
