Forrest R. Lewis Family Scholarship
Mallory NannyMallory Nanny, an incoming freshman from Charlotte, is the first recipient of the Forrest R. Lewis Family Scholarship. This award for new freshmen intending to major in art is based on a slide portfolio and essay. In her own words:

“On good days, my drawing brings me satisfaction and a strong sense of self-worth. On those occasional bad days when what I see in my head won’t show up on paper, I feel frustrated and grumpy the rest of the day.”

“I would love to combine my passion for art with my love of psychology to pursue a career in art therapy. I can think of no occupation more rewarding than that of helping others to express their emotions through art.”

Owen and Myrna Wexler Scholarship in Art

Melissa EbbinhouserMelissa Ebbinghouser is the first recipient of the Owen and Myrna Wexler Scholarship in Art, which is awarded to an outstanding major in the department. Passion and dedication are the qualities that best describe Melissa.. Since grade school she has had a passionate interest in the world of art, attending every class she could sign up for. Raised in Toms River, New Jersey, her involvement in high school art functions and attendance at public art classes fueled her interest to learn all she could about the artistic world. From visits to the Metropolitan Museum in New York to The Louvre in Paris, Melissa knew that her studies would lead her toward a career as an artist.

Upon visiting the UNCW Art Department in 2000, Melissa knew she wanted to dedicate her life’s work to her long-time passion of creating art. “I love that the commitment of the professors matches my own,” she says “I enjoy what I do and achieve a sense of accomplishment when I know another person appreciates my vision and sees the energy and effort behind its creation.”

Melissa will be graduating in December 2006 with Bachelor’s degrees in Studio Art and Art History. “By studying the work of those who came before, bringing to us an artistic depiction of their lifestyle, we can better understand the evolution of art and its historical importance and impact on the artists of today.” In the future Melissa plans to attend graduate school specializing in the areas of oil painting and collage, ceramics, and sculpture. Her ultimate goal is to own a gallery and studio from which she intends to bring her visions and love of art to the world.
