- For short run black and white and color
jobs (quantities around 1000 or less), the job is produced on
high-speed networked digital copiers at Dittos - The Copy Spot.
- The second type of printing is offset printing
and is done at the Print Shop. This type of printing is produced
on an offset press that prints ink onto paper. Offset printing
is intended for longer run, spot color and full color jobs.
Digital file preparation requirements depend
on the type of printing you need.
Dittos - The Copy Spot
Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are used extensively
at UNCW to create documents and we will accept those files; however,
when the documents are transferred to and opened on workstations other
than the original, the text sometimes shifts. The solution is to create
a PDF file of the document. PDF files contain all font and image information.
The advantage of a PDF file is that you will be able to open it with
the Acrobat Reader program and compare the formatting with your original
document. Formatting should be identical and "locked" in the PDF file.
Since major changes cannot be made to PDF files, careful proofing
is essential.
You must have Acrobat Distiller installed on your
computer to create a PDF file. If you need assistance downloading
Acrobat Distiller or creating a PDF file, call Dittos - The Copy
Spot at 910-962-3083. Digital files may be submitted on diskette,
zip disk, or CD.
SEACopy Web-based submitted files are automatically
converted to PDF files by the file transfer software.
Print Shop
Electronic files for offset jobs must be sent to the Print Shop
and processed through the prepress/design area. If the document
contains more than one color, it must be created with a page layout
computer program that is capable of doing color separations. Both
Quark XPress and PageMaker page layout programs in Mac and PC formats
are supported at the Print Shop. The Print Shop supports Adobe Illustrator
for illustration and Photoshop for photo editing.
Always complete the Preflight
Checklist and attach it to your "Request for Printing Services"
form.
If you are unable to submit files in a page layout
program, it is usually faster and less expensive to submit text
only files (no formatting) created in a word processing program
like Microsoft Word and let us import your text in the page layout
program.
Digital files can be submitted to the Print Shop on
diskette, zip disk, or CD. Space on our server for network transmitted
files is limited to university graphic designers.
