Hazardous Material Spills & Leaks:

If any hazardous, radioactive, or biohazardous material is spilled or is leaking, take prompt action to prevent further release or harm to persons in the area.

•  If the spill is small and you feel you can respond to the spill yourself consider the following: Do you understand the potential hazards involved, have appropriate absorbents, personal protective equipment and is there a second person nearby to call for help if needed, you can then continue the clean-up.

•  Stop the source of the leak if possible.

•  Contain the spill with absorbent or booms so it does not continue to spread.

•  Absorb the main body of the spill.

•  Use a scoop or dustpan to pick up the used absorbent and place it in an appropriate container. Label the container. Contact EH&S for disposal.

•  If the spill is large, you do not have appropriate equipment or you feel uneasy, contact EH&S at 910-962-3057 for assistance. After hours, call 911. Make sure to provide the following information:

Your name:
Building:
Room:
Material Released:
Quantity Released:
Describe Situation:

•  Leave the area immediately and if the spill is large, activate the fire alarm system to evacuate the building. Do not close the door, this will concentrate fumes.

Operation I.D.

Operation I.D. is a statewide program designed to discourage burglary and theft of valuables. It also provides an easy way to identify your valuables if stolen.

You may borrow an engraver from the University Police Department and use it to etch your driver's license number and state abbreviation onto your valuables.

•  Personal property, purses, briefcases, keys, etc., should never be left unattended. Take those items with you if you plan on leaving the office, classroom, or residence hall room.

•  When you leave your office or residence hall, make sure your door is locked.

•  Use OPERATION I.D. to your advantage. Record all serial numbers of both the University and personal property in your room or office. Also a record of your credit cards and numbers should be kept.

•  Keep a complete listing of textbook titles and authors. Place a hidden mark on the same page of each book. You may also want to write your name and social security number (or another number of your choosing) on the same page of each book.

IF YOU OWN A CAR

1. Keep your car locked at all times, never leave your keys in the vehicle, and avoid leaving any valuables where they can be seen, store them in the trunk instead.

•  Park in well-lighted areas designated for parking.

•  Before entering your vehicle, take a few moments to see if it has been broken into.

IF YOU OWN A BICYCLE

•  Bicycle registration is MANDATORY. Registration documents your serial number, make, model, and description with the University Police. This will enable the return of your bicycle should it ever be stolen and recovered. Registration is free of charge.

•  Park your bike in a public place so that any type of tampering will be observed by passers-by and discouraged.

•  MAKE SURE YOU LOCK YOUR BIKE. Locking your bike is one of the easiest ways to prevent your bike from being stolen. U-Bolt type locking devices afford the best protection.

•  When you lock your bike, secure it by locking the frame and one or both wheels to a bike rack.

•  Call 911 and give the Police Telecommunicator the following information: your name, location, telephone number and as much information as possible regarding the bomb threat including the bomb location, the time it is set to explode, and the time you received the call.

•  Notify your supervisor and/or the department head.

•  Local supervisors and/or the University Police will be responsible for building evacuation.

•  If you find a suspicious object, package or item, DO NOT TOUCH IT. Report it to the University Police.

•  If you are instructed to evacuate, move a safe distance away from the building, a minimum of 500 feet. Do not return to the building until instructed to do so by authorized personnel.

•  When you evacuate, do not stop for personal belongings or records. Leave immediately, closing doors behind you, using the exit stairways, not elevators.

•  Do not walk through or stand in a smoke cloud. Stay low to the floor when exiting if visibility is impaired due to smoke.
