Environmental
educators are professionals who are committed to enhancing public
understanding, attitudes and behaviors concerning the delicate relationships
among the living and nonliving worlds. They work in a wide variety
of formal and informal learning environments including schools,
colleges and universities, local, state and national parks, botanic
gardens and arboreta, zoos, museums, aquaria, camps, eco-tourist
attractions, and nature centers, and are often employed in federal
agencies, conservancies and other non-profit organizations devoted
to the preservation of the natural environment. Well-trained environmental
educators have a strong background in the biological and physical
sciences, a devotion to solving ecological problems, knowledge of
human cognition, learning, instructional design and assessment,
and a strong interest in working with individuals of all ages, socio-cultural
and ethnic backgrounds. At UNCW, our research program in environmental
education focuses on knowledge, attitudes and behaviors affecting
terrestrial and marine environments at the local, state, national
and international levels in collaboration with colleagues here and
at far-flung centers around the world. We prepare M.S. students
for placement in diverse working environments and for further study
at the Ph.D. level. |
