I am interested in the natural history and ecology of birds and mammals.  Much of my research has involved the conservation and management of rare or protected terrestrial species and studies of the ecological result of human-induced alterations in their biotic communities.  Recent research has focused on the effects of various forest management practices on habitat use and activity patterns of tree-dwelling bats and songbirds.  Now that I am back in a coastal setting, I will return to the study of nesting ecology of shorebirds and wading birds.  Recently, I have been involved with assisting the universities in the former Soviet Republic as they integrate studies of biodiversity into their curricula.
