UNCW to Dedicate Plaza in Dr. Eaton's Memory

UNCW will formally dedicate Eaton Plaza in memory of Dr. Hubert A. Eaton at 4 p.m. August 19. The ceremony is part of the university's 50th anniversary convocation celebration. The dedication of the plaza brings the Eaton family and the university together to celebrate Dr. Eaton's legacy. Dr. Hubert A. Eaton, Jr. will speak and assist with unveiling the street sign that officially declares the area Eaton Plaza. Eaton Plaza lies along the south side of Hinton James Hall and features new landscaping, sidewalks, benches and a fountain. A native of North Carolina, Dr. Eaton was born in Fayetteville. He became an admired physician and civil rights activist for the state. As a civil rights leader, Dr. Eaton petitioned the New Hanover Board of Education on December 11, 1950 to provide equal funding and support to African-American public schools. In addition to advocating more funding, he also initiated the desegregation of county schools and local medical care. Dr. Eaton extended his support to the tennis profession and UNCW. He coached Althea Gibson, the first black tennis player to be a national champion. He was involved with the university from 1977 to 1985 as member and chairman of the UNCW Board of Trustees. Dr. Eaton chronicled his life story in his book, Every Man Should Try.
