Roman Gabriel Tabbed as First Walk of Fame Inductee

Celebrate Wilmington! will kick off the new Walk of Fame with its first inductee, National Football League star Roman Gabriel, at ceremonies scheduled for 10 a.m. July 26 at the Cotton Exchange, Water Street. Master of ceremonies will be Joe Augustine, former football standout at UNC Chapel Hill and retired executive director of the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce. The ceremony is free and open to the public. A reception for Gabriel and his wife Lisa will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. July 25 at the Hilton. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by calling the Arts Council of the Lower Cape Fear at 762-4223 or the Cotton Exchange, 251-1040. Tickets can also be purchased at the Community Arts Center at Second and Orange Street. Annette Anderson in public service and extended education also has tickets for the reception. If interested, call her at ext. 3547. Gabriel, who had a 16-year career in the National Football League as the star quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams for 11 years and the Philadelphia Eagles for five years, was born in Wilmington and attended New Hanover High School where he was all-state in football, basketball and baseball. Although he was offered a professional contract by the New York Yankees, Gabriel accepted a scholarship to attend North Carolina State University where he was a scholastic All-American as well as a two-time football All-American. As a professional football player, Gabriel was all-Pro for four years, the Rams' Most Valuable Player three times, the 1969 NFL Most Valuable Player and Pro Bowl MCP. While with the Eagles, he was voted the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year and chosen Man of the Year in Philadelphia in 1973, '74 and '75. When he retired in 1977, he had accumulated 31,000 total yards and completed 201 touchdown passes. Gabriel is a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame and the National Collegiate Football Hall of Fame. He operates Roman Gabriel Sports Connection and Roma-Lisa All Pro Arabians. He is the color analyst on WBT for the NFL's Carolina Panthers. "The purpose of the Walk of Fame is to create a prestigious permanent record of notables who have lived, worked and/or enriched the Cape Fear Coast community," said Charlotte Cohen, chairman of Celebrate Wilmington!. As an inductee, Gabriel will be immortalized with an individually-designed star engraved with his name and date of induction. The Walk of Fame recognizes people who have a national reputation in their field: i.e., are recognized by the general public or their peers as being nationally important or have a national reputation in their field and have a local association. Fields include the arts, business, education, literature, broadcasting/television/journalism, sports, science, medicine, religion, politics/government and the military. Celebrate Wilmington! is a collaborative effort between the Arts Council of the Lower Cape Fear, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and the community to promote and publicize artistic and culture ventures in the region.
