KEVIN JACQUES NAMED VICE CHANCELLOR FOR UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT

Kevin C. Jacques has been named vice chancellor for university advancement at the university following approval by the UNC Board of Governors at its Friday meeting in Chapel Hill. Jacques comes to the university from Northern Arizona University where he is executive director of university development. He is also executive director of the Northern Arizona University Foundation. Northern Arizona University is located in Flagstaff. "The UNCW Board of Trustees and I are delighted that Kevin will be joining our team to lead fund-raising activities here," said Chancellor James R. Leutze. "With his 18 years of exemplary development work in higher education, Kevin brings broad experience and proven leadership to us." "Fund-raising is becoming increasingly important for universities who want to distinguish themselves with outstanding faculty and other opportunities for students. We look forward to having Kevin and his family join us in the Wilmington area," Leutze said. Jacques, a native of Tacoma, Wash., has double undergraduate majors in psychology and anthropology, cum laude, from Western Washington University in 1977. He attended the master's program in anthropology there in 1977-78. After college, he worked in private business and began his fund-raising career at the University of Puget Sound where he was prospect researcher and then was promoted to director of annual giving. In 1984 he was named director of development for campaigns and major gifts at Washington State University, and from 1983-85 he was director of development for the College of Liberal Arts at Washington State. He moved to Northern Arizona in 1995. His career covers an extensive record of strategic campaign and academic planning in higher education, bringing corporate, foundation and individual donor interests together with priority academic programs. At Northern Arizona he was responsible for a comprehensive reorganization of fund-raising activities, resulting in a nearly 300 percent increase in total gifts and a 66 percent increase in endowment and assets under the university's management. At Washington State University he was responsible for more than $45 million in gifts, including a significant part of its centennial campaign. Alumni giving participation there ranked first among public colleges and universities. Jacques and his wife Janet have two daughters, Cathy and Molly.

New Campus Communique Editor

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself, Phillip Brown, as the new editor of the Campus Communique. I have served as interim editor since April and have actually worked in university relations since August, 1996, beginning as a volunteer public relations intern. In January, I began coordinating publicity for the university's newest documentary about the North Carolina coast titled "Treasure Coast," which is scheduled to air this fall. I am a graduate of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to writing and editing the faculty/staff newsletter, I will assist university relations in publicizing news, events and accomplishments of the university, its faculty and staff to the local, state and/or national media. Additionally, I will maintain and coordinate the university's authority database, or expert list. Faculty and staff members who volunteer for inclusion in the database get the opportunity of national exposure in a multitude of media outlets through university relations' subscription to Profnet. I will also assist in coordinating the university's Speakers Bureau. If you have suggestions that will help me keep you more informed of university news and events, call me at ext. 7223, fax suggestions to ext. 3847, or send e-mail to COMMUNIQUE. I have thoroughly enjoyed working at the university thus far and look forward to continuing in my new position.

Application Deadline Nears for Redesigned Leadership Wilmington Program

Leadership Wilmington, a program sponsored jointly by the Division for Public Service and Extended Education and the Greater Wilmington Chamber Foundation, Inc., has been redesigned by last year's participants to be a more focused and innovative program. "Its mission is to provide our community with a diverse supply of creative leaders," explained Carter McKaughan, vice president of Wachovia Bank in Wilmington and a 1996 graduate of Leadership Wilmington who chaired the redesign committee. Starting with a two-day overnight retreat in the fall, the leadership schedule calls for 11 weekly community sessions featuring a panel of current leaders, activists and other concerned citizens who will discuss issues that the Leadership Wilmington participants identified during their retreat. Moderators will keep the three-hour sessions moving through discussion, question-and-answer period and an informal reception following each program. Session topics will include regional demographics and vision, community diversity, communications, effective leadership, health care trends, law enforcement and justice system, cultural life, planning for growth and housing challenges, education, transportation and business growth. At the end of the 12-week program, LW '97 participants will develop a report outlining conclusions and their solutions to the identified problems. The report will be presented to the chamber of commerce board of directors. After graduating, participants can join the active alumni group and/or serve on chamber or other community committees. Nominations are currently being sought from corporate, business, education, professional, non-profit and governmental sectors. A committee of past participants will select this year's class of 30. Tuition is $495 and can be paid by the participant, a sponsor or by scholarship. The fee covers expenses for the opening retreat, classes, speakers, breaks, notebooks, materials and graduation. Deadline to apply is July 15. For more information, contact Paul Laird at 762-9765.

Conflict of interest situations could arise, for example, whenever: university resources are utilized for personal gain; an employee utilized the influence of his or her position to profit personally; an employee knowingly fails to uphold the trust of the state or agency by which he or she is employed. This procedure also identifies specific areas where conflict of interest situations would more likely occur. Examples include vendor relationships, secondary and dual employment, use of university resources, such as supplies, equipment and facilities, contractual arrangements, political activities, management of contracts and grants; and mangement and use of financial resources. Administrative procedure MSC 1.50 is the primary source to assist employees in identifying and avoiding conflict of interest situations.
