INAUGURAL KUDOS RECEPTION HELD
The first KUDOS Reception was held May 28 at Kenan House, the residence of Chancellor James R. Leutze. Forty employees were recognized for exceptional customer service at the reception. KUDOS, an initiative by Chancellor Leutze and senior officers, promotes recognition of university employees who offer outstanding customer service in their job performance. Campus Dining Summer Hours Corrections
The Hawk's Nest will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and to 1 p.m. on Fridays. We will serve board plan students dinner from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Hawk's Nest through June 6. Wagoner Hall will open June 7 with the following hours: Monday - Friday, breakfast 7:15 - 9 a.m., lunch 11:15 a.m. - 1 p.m., and dinner 4:30 - 6 p.m. Hours may be extended to accommodate conference guests. Please note Wagoner Hall will not be serving continuous dining hours. Any changes in hours of operation will be announced.
Orientation Luncheons for Parents
A parents' orientation luncheon will be held at the Hawk's Nest from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. June 12, 19 and 26. Faculty and staff lunch menu at the Hawk's Nest will be the orientation menu on these days. Meals can be purchased at the door to the Glass Room. To avoid the rush, you may want to arrive before 12:30.
UNCW Bookstore Inventory
The UNCW bookstore will close at 11:30 a.m. June 27 to take inventory. It will reopen at 7:30 a.m. June 30.
Summer Jazz Workshop
The Music Department will offer a summer jazz workshop June 22-28. The workshop is designed to meet the needs of participants of varying abilities and experience levels, including middle school students and advanced players, and will cover virtually every aspect of jazz study. The workshop provides a week of intensive jazz study covering various aspects of jazz including improvisation, history, theory, master classes on each instrument of the jazz ensemble and concerts by students and faculty. Participants will be assigned to ensembles and classes based on skills determined at a placement audition. Workshop faculty include saxophonist Frank Bongiorno, trombonist Ken Foberg, jazz guitartist Robert Russell, drummers John Rack and Israel Bannerman, trumpeter James Brown and other guest faculty. Workshop fees are $275 for resident participants and $175 for commuters. For additional information, contact the music department at ext. 3390. Aquarius Featured on Florida Public TV
Florida public television producer Martina Schmid dives down to Aquarius for a firsthand look at living and working in an undersea habitat in the public television special, "Aquarius Undersea." Aquarius is an undersea habitat that allows scientists to live and work on the ocean floor and is the only one of its kind in the world. The habitat sat in 60 feet of water, nine miles off the coast of Key Largo, Fla. Scientists from all over the country compete to conduct research in this unique laboratory. The special airs on 13 Florida public television stations June 5-8.
UNCW-TV Broadcasts "Globe Watch"
Beginning this month, UNCW-TV will broadcast "Globe Watch" a current events television series on international affairs. The seven-part series will air at 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Tuesdays on Time Warner Cable channel 11. Host Chancellor James R. Leutze conducts in-depth interviews with a wide range of people from government officials to the person on the street. Analysis and commentary by Chancellor Leutze, dealing with each episode's central issue, concludes the program. For more information, call Kate Walsh at ext. 4082.
UNCW Hosts String Music Camp
UNCW will host the 1997 Summer Strings Camp for high school and advanced middle school violinists, violists, cellists and bassists June 8-13. Participants may choose either residential or day camp commuters. For more information about fees contact ext. 3195. Registration is through the Division for Public Service and Extended Education and requires a $50 deposit by tomorrow. Faculty for the camp will be Lynda Rolfes, violinist with the music department; Jack Budrow, former principal bassist, N.C. Symphony; David Oh, cellist, N.C. Symphony; Joby Brunjes and Rachel Thigpen, violist and violinists, Greensboro Symphony.
Men's Basketball Summer Camps
The UNCW's men's basketball program is again sponsoring summer day camps. A shooting camp for boys and girls is June 16-20. This half-day camp costs $85 for the child of any UNCW faculty, staff or student. Otherwise, the cost is $110 per child. There is also an all-day boysÕ camp July 21-25. The cost is $175 for a child of any UNCW employee or student. Otherwise, the cost is $200. Lunch is included in the day camp fee. For more information, call Sharon McCauley at ext. 3045.
Use TV to Reach New Students
With the addition of televisions to the University Union and Center, there is a new opportunity to reach summer orientation participants. Channel 77 runs continuously in these areas and will be the main places new students and parents gather during orientation. This may be a great way to reach new students. Contact Kate Walsh, UNCW-TV, at ext. 4082 to post an announcement or information piece on Channel 77. All orientation specific announcements will have a special heading so non-orientation viewers understand the target audience.
Living Arrangements for Visiting Scientist Needed
An apartment/room is needed for a visiting professor July 7-31. Anyone with information on possible apartments/rooms should contact Wilson Freshwater, CMSR, at 256-3721 ext. 214.
Campus Communique Publication Schedule
The Campus Communique will continue its weekly publication schedule during summer hours. The deadline for submissions is noon Tuesdays. E-mail contributions to COMMUNIQUE.
Invoice Deadline
All interdepartmental invoices to be paid for fiscal year 1996-97 must be processed and forwarded to accounting by June 27. If you have questions, call Sondra Roark at ext. 3150.
Travel Reimbursements
All travel reimbursements to be paid from this year's fiscal budget should be in accounting by June 27. All travel advances must be satisfied prior to June 30. Call Liz Johnson at ext. 3076 if you have any questions concerning year-end procedures. Travel taking place in the next fiscal year 1997-98 that does not require payment from this year's budget may be entered as a future requisition "FR."
Check Requests
Check requests to be paid from the 1996-97 budget should be in accounting by June 27. If you have questions, call Jan Lion Riemersma at ext. 3227.
Quality Faculty. . . Quality Staff
Mark Galizio, psychology, spoke on an invited panel discussion at the Association for Behavior Analysis Convention in Chicago, Ill. The title of the presentation was "Human and Nonhuman Operant Behavior: Issues of Sensitivity, Language and Interspecies Continuity." Galizio also served as discussant on two symposia at the meeting.
Lou Buttino, communication studies, received a finalist award from the Charleston International Film Festival for the documentary he wrote, directed, edited and coproduced titled "Hoover's Legacy: The Case of Frank Buttino." The internationally juried competition is one of the world's largest. It is ButtinoÕs second award from the festival. A previous documentary earned a silver prize for Best Independently Produced Documentary.
Terri Schutte-Beck, bookstore, recently was notified by the National Association of College Stores that she has been certified as a College Store Professional (CSP). A manager must receive specific training, take a national test and have worked in various leadership and management positions in the bookstore association to receive this certification. Terri has been very active in the national and regional associations.
Two Researchers Join Million Dollar Club
Courtney Hackney, biological sciences, and Robert Wicklund, NURC, were inducted into the Million Dollar Club at this year's faculty reception. The Office of Research Administration created the Million Dollar Club in 1994 as a way to recognize researchers that have continually plugged away at getting research funded. The club consists of those who have been a principle or co-principle investigator on cumulatively a million dollars' worth of externally funded projects. The other six members of the club are: Allen Halbert, NURC; Ted Jans, retired from SBTDC; Dick Ward, information technology; Steve Ross and James Merritt, CMSR; and Martin Posey, biological sciences.

SPA Performance Evaluations
SPA performance evaluations are due in human resources no later than June 16. Ratings must be submitted to the Office of State Personnel by June 20 to be eligible for any legislative salary increases.
CTE Changes Address
The Center for Teaching Excellence has relocated to Friday Hall, Rooms102 and 103. The center resumed all general operations last week. The telephone numbers are ext. 3034 for the office and ext. 7093 for the director. All faculty and staff members are welcome to visit CTE's new location.
Year End Inventory
Central stores will be closed for inventory June 25-30. Electronic ordering will be discontinued at 5 p.m. June 24. Emergency and walk-in orders will be processed. Normal operations resume July 1.
Purchasing Reminders
Delivery requirement for state-appropriated purchases is June 30. All equipment and supply orders should already be processed so purchasing staff can devote its time to receiving and invoicing goods. If state fund-supported orders do not arrive by June 30, the expense will be carried over to next yearÕs fiscal budget. Purchasing agents are available to answer your questions as necessary. Any orders placed through the World Wide Web are considered personal and ought to be handled as such. Orders between $50 and $150 can be reimbursed to an individual employee with prior approval from a purchasing agent. If you have any procedural questions, call Mary at ext. 3154.
Shared Leave Requests
Shared leave donations are needed to help Larry Cartwright, physical plant/housekeeping, avoid leave without pay during his recuperation from surgery. Call Dale at 3161 for further information.

July 4th Holiday Pay
July 4th falls on Friday, a four-hour day for employees working the official university summer schedule. To ensure that employees receive eight hours holiday time, supervisors should work with employees to schedule an additional four hours off at another time, staggering time off as necessary to meet operational requirements. If possible, time off should be scheduled during July. Questions regarding timekeeping may be referred to Alice Maile at ext. 3392.

Carowinds Discount Coupons
Discount coupons for admission to Carowinds theme park are available to UNCW faculty and staff. Valid dates are June 28-July 6 and August 30-September 1. Coupons may be picked up in human resources.
Administrative Proceduces Update
The following revised policies for the Administrative Policies and Procedures Manual have been approved and are now accessible to university departments via the World Wide Web:
HR 3.30 - Establishment and Classification of Positions, Change in Position Requirements Revisions have been made concerning establishment of new EPA and SPA positions. The revised HR 3.30 form should be used when requesting any of these position actions.
TEL 1.40 - Operator Services This procedure has been revised to update the services offered by Telecommunications Operator Services, including services such as TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf).
TRA 1.15 - Travel, Registration Fees and Other Expenses Minor revisions only have made to this policy. If registration fees are paid by the traveler and claimed on the travel reimbursement rather than a check request having been prepared, the registration receipt should be attached to the travel reimbursement form. A copy of the brochure is no longer required in this case.
TRA 1.16 - Travel, Remimbursement of Travel Costs Minor revisions only have been made to this policy to (1) specify the documentation requirements for reimbursement of registration fees as indicated in Procedure TRA 1.15 above and (2) indicate when the original of the signed vehicle request and invoice form documenting the non-availability of a state-owned vehicle must be attached to the travel reimbursement. The Administrative Policies and Procedures Manual is linked off the UNCW home page under Administration and is also accessible via the business affairs home page. It may also be accessed by typing INFO at the username prompt on VXA, VXB or VXC on the VAX.
