Watson School of Education Names Razor Walker Award Winners
The Watson School of Education awarded 14 North Carolinians the Razor Walker Award for distinguished service to the youth of this state at a reception and dinner on May 23 at Kenan House, residence of Chancellor James R. Leutze. "These individuals have taken personal and professional risks and have put forth extraordinary effort to realize a vision that would improve their communities. They have walked the 'razor's edge' where things are not always safe and predictable because each believes in a dream greater than him or herself that could change the lives of children," said Robert Tyndall, dean of the Watson School of Education. Tyndall founded this unique awards program in 1993 to honor individuals who have gone beyond normal expectations to create better services and opportunities for young people. He also noted that each year since its creation, up to 15 individuals have received the award. Awards are given in the categories of art/literature, business, educational administration, law, medicine, public service/policy and teaching/research. Each honoree is presented a plaque and medallion.

Wise Alumni House Dedication
The Board of Directors of UNCW's Alumni Association will officially dedicate Wise Alumni House at a formal ceremony at 7 p.m. June 7. The ceremony gives the Alumni Association an opportunity to recognize the alumni and friends whose time, efforts and contributions helped restore the historic house to its former majesty and retire the $400,000 renovation loan. The Alumni Association made the final loan payment this month prior to the June 2 deadline. The association raised the $471,799 necessary to retire the principal and interest through several fund-raising events and private donations. For more information, please call 251-2682.

Orientation Luncheons for Parents
Orientation luncheons for parents will be held in the Hawk's Nest from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. on June 12, 19 and 26. Faculty and staff lunch menu in the Hawk's Nest will be the orientation menu on these days. Meals can be purchased at the door to the glass room. To avoid the rush, you may want to arrive before 12:30 p.m. Sorry for the inconvenience. We hope everyone will help welcome parents during this time.
Campus Communique Publication Schedule
The Campus Communique will continue its weekly publication schedule during summer hours. The deadline for submissions is noon Tuesdays. E-mail contributions to COMMUNIQUE.
UNCW-TV Broadcasts Globe Watch
Beginning June 3, UNCW-TV will broadcast Globe Watch, a current events television series on international affairs. The seven-part series will air at 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Tuesdays on Time Warner Cable channel 11. Host Chancellor James R. Leutze conducts in-depth interviews with a wide range of people from government officials to the average person on the street. Analysis and commentary by Chancellor Leutze, dealing with each episode's central issue, concludes the program. For more information, call Kate Walsh at ext. 4082.
Campus Dining Summer Hours
Campus Dining will observe the following summer hours at the Hawk's Nest and Wagoner Hall: 7:15 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Wagoner Hall hours are June 7-August 2. Summer hours for the Seahawk Station are 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday.
UNCW Hosts String Music Camp
UNCW will host the 1997 Summer Strings Camp for high school and advanced middle school violinists, violists, cellists and bassists during the week of June 8-13. Participants may choose either residential or day camps. For more information about fees contact ext. 3195. Registration is through the Division of Public Service and Extended Education and requires a $50 deposit by June. 6. Faculty for the camp will be Lynda Rolfes, violinist with the music department; Jack Budrow, former principal bassist, N.C. Symphony; David Oh, cellist, N.C. Symphony; Joby Brunjes and Rachel Thigpen, violist and violinists, Greensboro Symphony.
962 Prefix Reminder
In June 1996, telecommunications notified the campus that BellSouth would be converting all university telephone lines from 395 and 350 to the new 962 prefix. Any persons dialing into the university using the old 395/350 prefix would automatically be transferred to 962-xxxx without a recording. In February, BellSouth activated intercept recordings that stated 395/350-xxxx had been changed to 962-xxxx. Bell South will discontinue all 962 intercept recordings on campus phones June 1. Please notify family, friends and colleagues of the change in our campus telephone prefix. It is our understanding that BellSouth will begin to assign our former prefixes, 395 and 350, to other businesses and households in the near future. 962 is the official prefix for the university.
Men's Basketball Summer Camps
The UNCW's men's basketball program will again be sponsoring summer day camps. There will be a Shooting Camp for boys and girls, June 16-20. This is a half-day camp that will cost $85 for the child of any UNCW faculty, staff or student. Otherwise, the cost is $110 per child. There will also be an all-day boys' camp the week of July 21-25. The cost will be $175 for a child of any UNCW employee or student. Otherwise, the cost is $200. Lunch is included in the day camp fee. For more information, call Sharon McCauley at ext. 3045.
UNCW Staff Bowling League
A mixed bowling league for UNCW staff is expected to begin August 28. The league will run approximately 30 weeks, excluding holidays and school breaks. At this time the league is limited to the first 56 interested bowlers. The league will be held at 6 p.m. Thursdays at Cardinal Lanes on Shipyard Boulevard. If you are interested, contact Paula Greene at ext. 3129 or Susan Chinnici at ext. 3127 today.
Summer Hours at Student Health
The Student Health Center will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays and 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays during Summers Sessions I and II.
Use TV to Reach New Students
With the addition of televisions to the University Union and Center, there is a new opportunity to reach summer orientation participants. Channel 77 runs continuously in these areas and will be the main places new students and parents gather during orientation. This may be a great way to reach new students. Contact Kate Walsh, UNCW-TV, at ext. 4082 to post an announcement or information piece on Channel 77. All orientation specific announcements will have a special heading so that non-orientation viewers understand the target audience. Thanks for supporting orientation and UNCW-TV.
Living Arrangements for Visiting Professor Needed

Summer Kayaking with Discover Outdoor Programs
Discover Outdoor Center will offer Friday afternoon tours from 1-5 p.m, May 30, June 13 and 27, and July 11 and 25. The $10 cost includes equipment, transportation, and instruction. The June 13 and 27 dates are open to family and friends of UNCW students, faculty and staff. Sign-up in the Discover Outdoor Center, University Center, Room 138. Science Competition Winners
Lauren Shepard, daughter of Andy Shepard, NURC, won first place in the environmental science division for middle schools at the N.C. School of Math and Sciences annual statewide science project competition April 18 in Greensboro. Matt Hall, son of Jack Hall, earth sciences, won third place in physical science (middle school advanced division). Lauren and Matt received help from UNCW. In particular, Steve Skrabal, chemistry, and Michael Smith, earth sciences, gave time to patiently guide the students and make science more fun.
Applications for Rotary Scholarships
Applications for 1998-99 Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships to be awarded worldwide are available from the local Rotary Club. The scholarships are designed to further international understanding and goodwill by providing study abroad in on of 150 countries and 35 geographical regions where Rotary Clubs are located. Scholarships are available to provide up to one academic year abroad. For more information contact the local Rotary Club president or Mimi Cunningham, member of Wilmington Rotary Club, at ext. 3171. Deadline for applications is June 1.
Fulbright Scholar Program
The Fulbright Scholar Program offers grants for lecturing and research in more than 120 countries. Opportunities are available in pratically every discipline and specialization. Quality Faculty. . . Quality Staff
Istvan Hargittai, chemistry, gave a seminar "Symmetry: The Chemical Connection" May 13 to the chemistry department of the University of Cincinnati. and spoke on the same topic to the chemistry department at Purdue University May 15.
Stephen A. Skrabal, chemistry, received appointment as adjunct faculty to the curriculum in marine sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Martin Posey, biological sciences, has been selected to participate in the Strategies for Ecology Education, Development and Sustainability (SEEDS) Project. This project is a joint venture of the Ecological Society of America and The College Fund/UNCF and seeks to develop partnerships at historically minority institutions to enhance ecology curricula. As one of eight partnership teams nationwide, Posey will be working with members of the science faculty at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh.
Robert George, biological sciences, presented "Further Plans for Studies on the Biodiversity of Continental Shelf and Deep Sea Environment off Carolinas" May 19 at the National Science Foundation before the N.S.F.\Systematic Biology program in Washington, D.C.
Pierre J. Lapaire, foreign languages and literatures, had his review of Eugene Holland's book Baudelaire and Schizoanalysis: The Sociopoetics of Modernism, Cambridge University Press, published in The French Review, vol 69-6, May 1997.
Arthur Spivack, earth sciences, presented a paper "Stable Cl Isotopic Composition of Pacific Aerosols: Implications for the Volatilization Mechanism of Cl" at the American Geophysical Union meeting in Baltimore, Md.
William Cleary, earth sciences and CMSR's Coastal Studies Unit, has been appointed to the North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission Science Panel on Coastal Hazards. The newly formed panel deals with revamping the state's coastal hazards management program.

Year End Inventory
Central stores will be closed for inventory June 25-30. Electronic ordering will be discontinued at 5 p.m. June 24. Emergency and walk-in orders will be processed. Normal operations resume July 1.
Randall Library Summer Hours
Randall Library will observe the following summer hours: 7:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday. The library will be open 7:45 a.m. to 8 p.m., exam day, June 27.
Student Timesheets and Departmental Recap Deadlines
The deadline for student timesheets and departmental recaps for payment June 15 is 10 a.m. May 30 in the payroll office. Students should submit timesheets to their department representatives not to payroll. Students not listed on departmental recap sheets may require additional paperwork. Check with Frances Carr in career services to make sure that all paperwork has been received prior to adding students to your recap sheets.
Computer Operations Summer Hours on Fridays
In observance of the summer work schedule, computer operations will close at 2 p.m. on Fridays. ADS, FRS and HRS will shut down for batch processing at 1 p.m. Fridays. SIS will remain online until 10 p.m. as normal. Contact Ray Humphries at ext. 3799 regarding exceptions to this schedule.
Service Awards Luncheon
The 1997 UNCW Service Awards Luncheon will be held from noon to 2 p.m. June 5 in Wagoner Hall. The keynote speaker will be John Bennett, health, physical education, and recreation professor. The master of ceremonies will be Ty Rowell, interim vice chancellor for university advancement. The following UNCW employees have been nominated for the Governor's Award for Excellence this year and will be recognized at the 22nd Service Awards Luncheon at Wagoner Hall on June 5: Sue Cody, Randall Library; Jessiebeth Geddie, bookstore; Yael Gold, Student Development Center; Michael Lloyd, printing services; Julie Owen, Leadership Center; Christopher Powell, CMSR; Richard Scott, business affairs; Carol Strickland, systems and procedures; and Ronald E. Whittaker, registration. UNCW's nominee for the Governors Award for Excellence will receive a check for $1,500 designated by the Board of Trustees, a reserved parking space for one year, and three days of vacation leave. If you have any tickets and are now unable to use them, please return them to human resources as soon as possible. There is a waiting list of people who would like to attend.

Carowinds Discount Coupons
Discount coupons for admission to Carowinds theme park are available to UNCW faculty and staff. Valid dates are June 28-July 6 and August 30-September 1. Coupons may be picked up in human resources.
Community
The Wilmington Boys Choir will hold auditions for its fall season tonight at 5 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 16th and Market Streets. The non-denominational community-based organization is open to boys 8 and older. Previous musical experience is not required.
New Hanover County Library's Summer Reading Club sign up begins June 6. Young people ages 2 through 16 are eligible to join, sign up and set personal summer reading goals at any public library branch. Preschoolers who are not yet reading on their own may count books read aloud to them. Each reader who signs up will receive a pass for a Wilmington Hammerheads home game. Participants meeting their personal goals will receive two prize coupons from local sponsors. Among the sponsors are Sunset Skating Rink, Baskin-Robbins, Carolina Beach Jungle Golf, Chuck E. Cheese, Cardinal Lanes Bowling, Kohl's Frozen Custard, Springbrook Farms Horsedrawn Carriage Rides and Cape Fear Riverboats. For more information, call the New Hanover Public Library at 341-4392.
