ASSESSMENT RESOURCES

What CAS Departments

are Doing in Assessment

The following program reports summarize the assessment activities over the last three years for six of the degree programs in the College of Arts and Sciences. These examples represent the broad range of disciplines in the college. Each program has demonstrated at least one full cycle of the assessment process by defining student learning outcomes and the means of assessing each of them, collecting and analyzing data from those assessment, and taking actions based on the data to improve student learning. Most are already seeing positive results from the changes they’ve made. Information in the reports will be helpful to all those working on program-level assessment at UNCW.

BA English Professional Writing Option – Changes that target student abilities to use technology effectively, to assess their own development, and to argue clearly and effectively.

BA Psychology – Changes that target student understanding of scientific principles and quantitative reasoning abilities.

BS Environment Studies – Changes that target student field and academic research skills.

MA History – Changes that target student abilities to evaluate and analyze primary sources.

MA Liberal Studies – Changes that target student writing abilities and that target consistency in instruction between main and satellite campuses.

MS Biology – Changes that create a culture of inquiry and target student abilities to answer questions and defend positions orally.
