Trailblazing projects and programs include:
Creative Writing
The Department of Creative Writing seeks to raise $500,000 over the next five years to provide five annual fellowships for graduate students in its MFA in Creative Writing program. These fellowships will keep UNC Wilmington's Creative Writing program nationally and internationally competitive, enabling the university to attract students of the highest qualifications and abilities. Unlike other disciplines, where faculty credentials take priority, writing programs are measured by the output and accomplishments of their students. Support , particularly fellowships, permit gifted students to concentrate fully on the development of their talent and promise.
Jewish History
In response to the challenge grant of the Board of Governors, provided by the Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund and established by the North Carolina General Assembly, the university plans to seek gifts to endow a Distinguished Professorship on Jewish History. Expected benefits to UNC Wilmington are many. The study of Jewish civilization from its origins in the ancient world to its contemporary settings, primarily in the United States and Israel, clearly supports the university's commitment to exploring issues of diversity within a national and global context. An outsider culture among almost all of the societies it has impacted, yet a cornerstone culture defining issues of human individuality, justice and ethics within those same cultures, Jewish history is a singularly distinctive study within the humanities and the course of civilization. A faculty position in Jewish civilization will attract students and faculty from other institutions to the university and further UNC Wilmington's reputation as a leading institution within the UNC system.
Film Studies
UNCW is committed to offering students an experience in the study and
production of film that totally engages the learner, offering technologically
advanced, hands-on student film production learning opportunities. Cooperative
partnerships with film industry leaders here in Wilmington permit the
university to offer students real-world experience and access to up-to-date
film making tools and techniques. Individual donors, corporations and
foundations can join this collaborative effort by supporting this exciting
priority, assuring that Film Studies at UNCW become a nationally recognized
program of excellence and a vital partner in the advancement of the film
industry in Southeastern North Carolina for years to come. Capital needs
include materials for film processing and the purchase of course-specific
teaching enhancements.
