BOATING ACTIVITIES

INFORMATION ON UNCW's GUIDE FOR SAFE BOATING OPERATIONS

UNCW's Guide for Safe Boating Operations prescribes the rules, regulations and requirements of all persons operating boats under the auspices of the Center for Marine Science at UNCW. Copies of the manual may be obtained by qualified applicants from the CMS Diving and Boating Safety Office.

The UNCW Guide for Safe Boating Operations is a working document of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and has been approved by the CMS Diving and Boating Safety Office and the Chancellors Office.


REQUIREMENTS FOR UNCW BOATING CERTIFICATION:

  • Be 18 years of age or have permission of Parents.
  • Complete the UNCW Participant Information Form.
    Note: All boating participants must provide proof of major medical insurance coverage before they will be allowed to participate in boating activities
  • Submit to the CMS Diving and Boating Safety Office proof of completion of an approved course on boating safety (UNCW, CG Aux., Power Sq., approved on-line boating course, etc.)  
  • Submit resume of boating experience. 
  • Submit to the CMS Diving and Boating Safety Office proof of certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first aid. 
  • Successfully complete with a grade of 75% or better, a written exam on Coast Guard, State and University rules for safety and safe boat handling practices.
  • To the satisfaction of the CMS Diving and Boating Safety Office, successfully demonstrate safe boat handling skills and systems familiarization in the vessel to be utilized by the operator. 
  • At the discretion of the CMS Diving and Boating Safety Office, complete an orientation check-out of the area to be used by the operator.

Scientific Diving



INFORMATION ON UNCW'S MANUAL FOR SCIENTIFIC DIVING PROGRAMS
AND SCIENTIFIC DIVING QUALIFICATIONS

In addition to regulations imposed by the CMS Diving and Boating Safety Office of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, UNCW has adopted the Scientific Diving Standards of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences. These standards are in compliance with the USDOL's Occupational Health Act of the US and reflect the Standard of the Community of Scientific Diving.  Copies of the UNCW Standards for Scientific Diving Certification and Operation of Scientific Diving Operations may be obtained by qualified applicants from the CMS Diving and Boating Safety Office. REQUIREMENTS FOR UNCW RESEARCH DIVER QUALIFICATION:

  • Certification by a nationally recognized certifying agency to the level of Open Water Diver and at least 10 hours of SCUBA experience beyond Open Water Certification. 
  • Possess current Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation/First aid certification. 
  • Possess current certification in oxygen administration for diving accidents
  • Submission of resume of diving experience. 
  • Satisfactorily complete a written exam on SCUBA knowledge and understanding the UNCW/AAUS Diving for Science Manual. 
  • Successfully complete a medical fitness exam by a physician to confirm fitness to dive. 
  • Complete the UNCW Participant Information Form.
    Note: All diving participants must provide proof of diving accident insurance coverage such as Workman's Compensation (if research diving is included in your job description), major medical coverage (that covers diving accidents), or Divers Alert Network diving accident insurance.
  • Satisfactorily complete a skills test which includes an equipment inspection. 
  • Satisfactorily complete an open water check-out. 

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR SKIN DIVING QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Complete a medical history form
  • Successfully demonstrate swimming ability
  • Demonstrate safe use of snorkeling equipment
  • Comply with rules and guidelines found in the UNCW Standards Manual for Scientific Diving
