UNCW Students’ Documentary Wins National Honors
by Walter Zaykowski, Marketing & Communications Intern

Wilmington, NC – A student video documentary by three UNCW alumni, Justin West ’05 and
Keith Fanning ’06 of Nags Head and Aaron Blakely ’06 of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., won third place in the documentary category of the Broadcast Education Association Student Video Competition. The award was recently announced at the 51st Annual Convention of the Broadcast Education Association in Las Vegas according to Dr. Bill Bolduc, associate professor of communication studies at UNCW.

The documentary, “An Interview with Terry Diamond,” was originally an assignment for Field Video I, an undergraduate communication studies course, and offers a 12-minute look into the motivations and styles behind the art work of UNCW alumnus Terry Diamond ’06.

Originally from Philadelphia, Pa., Diamond graduated in May with degrees in communication studies and art.  He is an artist who likes to work in several different styles including abstract, pop art, graphic design, film and even sometimes something he learned about growing up in the city, graffiti.  Because of his wide ranging work, Diamond describes his style as “very eclectic.”  He works mostly with acrylics, oil, and mixed media and paints his work on many different settings including canvas, wood, furniture and even murals.  Distinguishing characteristics of Diamond’s work are pieces that contain a great deal of text and work that deals heavily with one of the artist’s passions, travel. Artists who have influenced Diamond and his work are Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Diego Rivera.

Bolduc, the students’ professor and the individual who nominated the documentary for this award, said, “These students have an exceptional eye for creating compelling video images, and they are great storytellers.  The fact that they were documenting the work of a talented artist just added to the visual impact of the project.”

The short documentary was recorded on a digital video camcorder in a way that enhanced the visual depth and color of the project, giving it a softer look than traditional video.  The project was edited on Final Cut Pro non-linear editing software located in the Communication Studies Department editing suite.
