The steady rise in popularity and importance of the communication studies discipline at UNCW and elsewhere has led to our department's substantial student population. In order to maintain at least a workable student/faculty ratio, it became essential for our department to establish an admissions gateway process for those seeking a B.A.degree in communication studies. To become a pre-communication studies (PCOM) major, a student must complete COM 105 Introduction to Communication Studies with a grade of "B" or higher. Once that grade is earned, a student completes a PCOM application, is logged as a PCOM major, and next takes COM 200 Research Methods with the same "B" or higher grade requirement. While navigating the two-course gateway, other COM classes, typically at the 100-200 level, are also available to students. However, elective classes are completed with the understanding that, until COM 105 and COM 200 have been successfully completed, a student is not an official COM major. Navigate the links below for additional information regarding the PCOM program.
