PCOM Program & Information

The steady rise in popularity and importance of the communication studies discipline at UNCW and elsewhere has led to our department's substantial student population.  In order to maintain at least a workable student/faculty ratio, it became essential for our department to establish an admissions gateway process for those seeking a B.A.degree in communication studies.

To become a pre-communication studies (PCOM) major, a student must complete COM 105 Introduction to Communication Studies with a grade of "B" or higher.  Once that grade is earned, a student completes a PCOM application, is logged as a PCOM major, and next takes COM 200 Research Methods with the same "B" or higher grade requirement.  While navigating the two-course gateway, other COM classes, typically at the 100-200 level, are also available to students.  However, elective classes are completed with the understanding that, until COM 105 and COM 200 have been successfully completed, a student is not an official COM major.  Navigate the links below for additional information regarding the PCOM program.
