Bioinformatics Research Group Projects

GridNexus

We are currently porting the functionality we implemented in GeneBeans to the GridNexus system. We currently have support for TIGR Plant Indices and PlantGDB.

GeneBeans/QueryConnect

The UNCW Bioinformatics Research Group's first general-purpose project was GeneBeans (a.k.a. QueryConnect), a set of genome-analysis initiatives. Its components were:

A brief tutorial on the dataflow interface is still available.

BioGrid

We were members of the Applications Portal Working Group of the North Carolina BioGrid, hosted by the North Carolina Supercomputer Center, and continue to work with the BioGrid.

Maize Transmembrane Helicity

One of our initial projects was the The Maize Transmembrane Helicity Search Site, a Computer Science Honors project by Chris Wrede overseen by Dr Stapleton and Dr Jeff Brown of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. This website indexes putative transmembrane helices in maize.

Sponsors:
The UNCW Bioinformatics Research Group has received funding from the National Science Foundation Plant Genome Research Project (PI: Stapleton) and, through the GridNexus group, from the University of North Carolina (PI: Vetter). IBM provided software support for the early efforts of our group. The Plant Gene Indices of The Institute for Genome Research are our primary data source.
