GridNexus

We are currently porting the functionality we implemented in GeneBeans to the GridNexus system. We currently have support for TIGR Plant Indices and PlantGDB.

GeneBeans/QueryConnect

The UNCW Bioinformatics Research Group's first general-purpose project was GeneBeans (a.k.a. QueryConnect), a set of genome-analysis initiatives. Its components were:

An engine, with graphical user interface, that models bioinformatics queries as dataflow graphs.
Software that allowed users to specify the domain-relevant portions of an SQL query and automatically generates the remainder
A JavaBeans-based server to allow Internet access to relational databases.

A brief tutorial on the dataflow interface is still available.

BioGrid

We were members of the Applications Portal Working Group of the North Carolina BioGrid, hosted by the North Carolina Supercomputer Center, and continue to work with the BioGrid.

Maize Transmembrane Helicity

One of our initial projects was the The Maize Transmembrane Helicity Search Site, a Computer Science Honors project by Chris Wrede overseen by Dr Stapleton and Dr Jeff Brown of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. This website indexes putative transmembrane helices in maize.

IBM provided software support for the early efforts of our group. The Plant Gene Indices of The Institute for Genome Research are our primary data source.
