The Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington works with faculty to develop teaching portfolios. A key ingredient to such a portfolio is the teaching statement. The teaching statement allows the instructor to summarize for others their role in student learning by providing a personal statement about their expectations of the learner and what the learner can expect from the instructor. There is not correct format to a teaching statement, as can be seen from the examples provided below. This can add to the anxiety one might experience when writing such a statement. The Center for teaching excellence can help to reduce this anxiety and provide a way to begin this endeavor.
