Hernandez Named Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion
Jose E. Hernandez, former Director of Diversity and Inclusion for the University of South Florida, joins UNCW as Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion on Aug. 11.
Hernandez will work with UNCW and the community to develop, implement and manage programs, practices and policies that foster structural equity resulting in a more inclusive, egalitarian and collaborative environment. In supporting UNCW's strategic goal of embracing and enhancing diversity, he will assume a leading role in fostering a climate of appreciation for differences within members of the student body, faculty and staff. He will also serve as adjunct faculty in the Watson School of Education.
In addition to his eight years with the USF comprehensive institutional diversity and inclusion program, Hernandez chaired the department of psychology and taught graduate courses in group and multicultural counseling. He was also an assistant professor at Bethune-Cookman University, specializing in counseling methods, the psychology of teaching and learning, human systems and lifespan development. He holds a Doctor of Education from the University of Central Florida, a Master of Science in counseling and human systems from Florida State University and certifications as a mental health counselor, mediator and affirmative action professional.

The Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society continues to accept applications to the spring 2008 Diversity Fellowship, the U.S.-based component of the Emerging Leaders International Fellows Program. The deadline for application is December 31, 2007.
This is a rare opportunity for Third-Sector practitioners from communities of color in the United States to spend 3 months in New York City to network, study and reflect!
