The Wachovia Bank Scholarship is a diversity scholarship awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student who has been accepted into the Cameron School of Business.  The scholarship recipient will be selected based on demonstrated academic ability.  The award may be renewed subject to the scholarship committee's recommendation.

 

Mae Rachel Freeman Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who has demonstrated leadership qualities, a record of community involvement, and the transcendence of personal hardship to enhance minority presence at UNCW. Recipients with demonstrated interests in African-American heritage are considered. Additionally, the scholarship is restricted to graduates
of high schools in New Hanover, Bladen, Pender, Columbus, Onslow, Brunswick, Sampson, or Duplin Counties. The recipient is expected to have researched information concerning Mae Rachel Freeman and her contributions to the community and is required to submit three letters of reference. Incoming freshman recipients must have an overall high school grade point average (GPA) of 2.80 on a 4.00 scale. Currently enrolled university students must have a 2.80 GPA on all college/university academic work. Complete the Financial Aid and Veterans Services Office (FAVSO) web-based application to be considered.

 

The Ernest A. Swain Scholarship was created by the Omicron Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity to honor Ernest A. Swain, the man, his profession, and his service to the New Hanover County community. It is a merit cholarship with a required minimum 2.50 GPA. The selected recipient will reflect the superior qualities and characteristics embodied in Mr. Swain through his decades of selfless leadership in the African American community where he served as an educator and school administrator who fought for excellence in education for young people of all ages. The recipient will have demonstrated leadership through volunteer community service in the African American community where he/she lived.

 

The Dr. L. W. Upperman Scholarship was created by Dr. Upperman in acknowledgement of his deep concern and desire to give something of substance and meaning to the African-American community. It is awarded annually to an incoming freshman resident of North Carolina to enhance minority presence at UNCW. It is awarded to an incoming freshman with demonstrated interests in African-American heritage. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years. No application is required.

 

The Williston Alumni Scholarship was created by alumni of Williston Industrial and Williston Senior High Schools. It is awarded to a deserving freshman who has indicated an interest in the field of education. Preference is given to descendants of individuals who attended or graduated from Williston Industrial or Williston Senior High School. If no such candidate applies, it may
be awarded to a student from an under-represented group, or to any diverse person.

 

Incentive Scholarship and Grant Program for Native Americans is a state funded program established by the General Assembly of North Carolina. The program was established to increase Native American enrollment at the constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina. Eligibility is limited to degree students who maintain cultural identification as an American
Indian through membership in an Indian tribe recognized by the state of North Carolina or by the federal government or through other tribal affiliation or community recognition. Students must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered. New students are automatically considered for these awards by the Financial Aid and Veterans Services Office
(FAVSO). The FAVSO determines renewals for continuing students.

 

Boseman-Tenhuisen Scholarship was created by outwilmington.com, and is reserved for members of the campus based B-GLAD organization whose membership is open to all students. It requires a minimum 2.00 GPA. A committee of organizational members selects the recipient. Applications should be made directly to the campus B-GLAD advisor.

 

The Edward and Pauline Nessleroade Merit Scholarship is available to an entering or continuing student with preference given to students who have a physical disability, exhibit academic excellence and demonstrate financial need. A continuing student must be in good standing and making satisfactory progress toward a degree.

 

The Ralph H. Parker Scholarship was created and funded by alumni and friends of Ralph H. Parker, former director of the UNCW Office of Minority Affairs, to recognize his long-time service to UNCW.  The scholarship is intended for any currently enrolled full-time UNCW student, is based on academic achievement and financial need.  The recipient must have demonstrated the qualities of campus leadership as exemplified by Mr. Parker during his service to UNCW.  Complete the Financial Aid and Veteran Services Office (FAVSO) web-based application to be considered.

Scholarships for Women

The Beth Dow Fortenbery Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a female freshman student from North Carolina or Virginia who intends to major in business and is involved in an international program or course in the Cameron School of Business.  The scholarship is renewable annually, at the discretion of the dean, if academic performance is within accepted guidelines.

 

The Mary R. King Memorial Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship for female students who are rising juniors or seniors in the Cameron School of Business. Recipients must have graduated from a high school in southeast North Carolina.

 

The Sally R. Wilkins Scholarship is awarded annually to a female student pursuing a business or professional career.  Applicants must have clearly designed academic goals and be able to demonstrate financial need.

 

Scholarships Awarded by Community Organizations

The following scholarships are awarded to UNCW students by off-campus agencies.  Unless otherwise noted, completing the Financial Aid and Veterans Services Office (FAVSO) scholarship application online will be necessary to be considered for these scholarships.

The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Scholarship was established by the Theta Iota chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for the purpose of increasing minority female enrollment.  Students from high schools in Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender Counties and high schools of the current members in the sorority may apply.  The recipient will be selected based on the combination of proven academic achievement, community service, and school involvement.

 

The GlaxoSmithKline Women in Science Program was established to encourage women to enter the sciences.  Recipients must have a 3.00 GPA, and will be assigned a woman mentor from GlaxoSmithKline, Inc.

 

Italian Heritage Society of Cape Fear Scholarship shall solicit and receive applications from students who are interested in applying for this scholarship which is intended to recognize an Italian American student.  The scholarship is merit based.  Apply directly to the Italian Heritage Society of Cape Fear.

 

The Beatrice Sharpless-Moore Scholarship is awarded by the managers of the Sharpless-Moore Foundation, and is designed to recognize African American students for their commitment to higher education and their community.  This scholarship will provide a non-renewable $1,000 support for the freshman year to students who have graduated from a New Hanover County high school, who have demonstrated academic excellence in their high school studies, with a minimum 3.00 GPA, and who have been active in their community.  Candidates may obtain forms to apply for this scholarship from the Office of Financial Aid.

 

The AARP Foundation scholarship program to help low-income women 40+ participate in education and training opportunities. Approximately 100 scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000 are expected to be awarded in the first round.  The process opens August 31, 2007 at www.aarp.org/womensscholarship. Applications are only available online.

 

Triangle Native American Society Scholarship. Previously known as the Mark Ulmer Native American scholarship, Triangle Native American Society has established a scholarship fund that has funded over twenty-five undergraduate students enrolled in UNC system schools across North Carolina. For the current academic year, a minimum of $500 per scholarship will be awarded before the fall semester or quarter of the following academic calendar, and as many as four scholarships may be awarded. The application deadline is June 10 of each year. The Scholarship Committee, in conjunction with the Executive Committee of Triangle Native, will review all applications submitted and notify awardees of the scholarship by the last Saturday in July via telephone. (Note: As much as $1,000 may be awarded to highly exceptional applicants. Prior applicants and awardees still meeting the scholarship requirements are encouraged to re-apply yearly.) Application.

Applicant must be an American, residing in the state of North Carolina for the past twelve (12) months. Applicant must provide proof of American Indian ethnic background as defined below:

An individual who maintains cultural identification as an American Indian through membership in a Native American tribe recognized by the State of North Carolina or the Federal Government. Guidelines set forth by the federal Indian Education Act, Section 453(a); 20 U.S.C. 122h(a) will also be considered.

Applicant must be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior with a minimum grade point average of 2.50 on a 4.00 scale and enrolled as a full-time student for the next semester/quarter in one of the 16 schools of the University of North Carolina system.

 

NEW! 2008-2009 XEROX Technical Minority Scholarship Program was developed to demonstrate the strong commitment by Xerox to provide financial support and meaningful experiences for minorities. Scholarships are made available to minorities enrolled in a technical degree program at the bachelor level or above.

The Xerox Technical Minority Scholarship provides funding to minority students enrolled as a full time student in one of the technical sciences or engineering disciplines. This scholarship is available to US Citizens and individuals with Permanent Resident visas. The scholarship is not available to spouses and children of Xerox employees.

Applicants must be academic high-achievers (3.0 or better GPA). Applicants must be US citizens or visa-holding Permanent Residents of African American, Asian, Pacific Island, Native American, Native Alaskan, or Hispanic descent.

NEW! The North Carolina Hispanic College Fund awards annual scholarships worth between $500 and $2,500.  Scholarships recipients are recent graduates of North Carolina high schools who are of Hispanic/Latino background.  Recipients of a NC Hispanic College Fund scholarship must enroll in a degree program at a community college or a 2- or 4-year college/university and be committed to public service and community development.
