Adult Scholars Leadership Program
The Adult Scholars Leadership Program engages seniors with community leaders, experts and policy makers to proactively explore, learn and participate in solutions to our regional challenges. The program provides participants with a political, economic, educational, law enforcement, historical and cultural view of the region; identifies and responds to critical challenges in our region; encourages participants to become involved in community activities as volunteers; and inspires participants to create events that meet their needs and benefit the community.
Senior Offering Solutions(SOS), a pilot program, is an opportunity where seniors translate their life skills and professional experience into meaningful volunteer service with the university and community. SOS harnesses the intellectual capital of active seniors to help solve real problems and enhance the quality of life in our area. We do this by connecting SOS members with UNC Wilmington faculty and students, regional organizations and community leaders to work on issues where SOS members have experience, expertise or simply a deep interest.

With 78 million Baby Boomers preparing for retirement and so many active seniors looking for meaningful volunteer activities in the Cape Fear region, UNCW recognizes the tremendous opportunity to mobilize an unprecedented human capital with the need for community development.
The process is simple, but the rewards are great. To become an SOS graduate and begin engaging in meaningful community projects, all participants attend three daytime classes (about 8 hours total time), which provide the following: an extensive overview of the challenges facing baby boomers and their communities in the coming years; a self-assessment workshop to give you an objective view of your talents and passions; and an introduction to the leaders of select programs within UNCW and the local community.
All SOS graduates then choose the volunteer program that they feel best provides a mutually beneficial relationship, whereby their skills are utilized by an organization in need of a skilled senior perspective.
