Coastal Encounters

Spend a full-day exploring the exciting study of marine science through classroom, laboratory and field activities. The Coastal Encounters program begins at the UNCW Center for Marine Science where students will participate in selected hands-on activates. After lunch, school groups will travel to their field locations where they will get "hands-on, feet-wet" learning opportunities in areas such as the marsh, beach or fouling community.

All Coastal Encounter field activities are divided into two main geographical areas: Wrightsville Beach area and Carolina Beach/Fort Fisher area.

Click here to see a map of the areas we explore (please give the map a few seconds to load). Click on an area to view what activities are available.

Additional Activities

Research Vessels
Masonboro Island Trips
Kayaking

Coastal Encounters can be either single or multiple day programs, but are designed to run from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.  All Coastal Encounter programs include lunch.

Agendas are based on national education standards, including ocean literacy principals, and many highlight UNCW faculty research.
