What to Bring/What to Wear (pdf)
Must have completed 10th grade and be 17 by May 1st. May not turn 18 before September 1st. Campers who have completed Camp O.C.E.A.N.S. and are not yet 17 may apply.
Oceans 17 provides serious marine science enthusiasts with the chance to conduct experimental research and participate in community service that benefits our marine environment. Campers will spend three weeks collecting and interpreting data that supports current research being conducted by scientists at UNCW. In between their research, kayaking, surfing, boogie boarding and other fun stuff, campers will complete a community service project that improves the quality of our local marine habitats.
Documentation for service hours can be provided to schools. Please let us know before you leave camp if you are interested.
Activities include:
- Build a buoy; work with a professional ROV; participate in a full-day offshore research cruise; introduction to marine biotechnology and biomimicry; tour the Aquaculture center and a local Algae-for-Biodeisel plant, the Center for Marine Science and other marine facilities; field excursions to Masonboro Island, the beach, marsh and fouling community; kayaking, boogie boarding, snorkeling etc...
Highlights include:
- Complete a research project and learn how to put a professional presentation together; complete a community service project that benefits the marine environment; interact with UNCW research scientists; explore marine habitats by kayak and on foot; transect analysis while snorkeling; field research using Vernier LabQuest computers; analyze phytoplankton and chlorophyll data for a NOAA sponsored program, participate in boogie board oceanography; take a surf lesson; and more…

| The MarineQuest staff is more than happy to pick-up and drop-off campers at Wilmington International Airport - click here. If you need this service, be sure to inform us when you register. | ||
| • Linens are not provided - bring XL twin sheets, pillows, and blankets. | ||

| • Laundry facilities are available - bring detergent and quarters. | ||
