Minutes from the Annual Business Meeting of the International
Dreiser Society
Long Beach, California
May 27, 2000
In attendance were Clare Eby, Philip Gerber, Yoshi Hakutani,
Larry Hussman, Roark Mulligan, Keith Newlin, Paul Orlov, Tom Riggio,
Fred Rusch, and Shawn St. Jean.
Paul Orlov reported
- that there are about 70 current members. This is an increase
of 10 or 15, and several have joined using the web-site
application.
- that he has discussed funding for the Sister Carrie
Centenary with University of Pennsylvania representatives.
- that he has arranged for a theater group to perform scenes
from a dramatic version of Sister Carrie at the
Centenary.
Tom Riggio moved
- that the Dreiser Society spend up to 1,500 dollars supporting
the Sister Carrie Centenary. --All voted in favor.
Tom Riggio reported the preliminary schedule for the Sister
Carrie Centenary would feature:
An address by Joseph Epstein, a biography session, an
audio-visual presentation, a teaching Sister Carrie panel, an
editing Sister Carrie discussion, a session on working women,
a slide show of Chicago and New York, a series of first impressions,
a panel of international perspectives, film adaptations, Paul
Dresser songs, a miscellaneous session, and the theatrical
production of Sister Carrie. Anyone interested in
participating in a session should contact Tom Riggio or Jim West.
Steve Brennan reported
- that ALA will use the Long Beach-Boston locations for the next
few years.
- that the ALA will become a non-profit organization and that
societies must begin to keep historical records.
- that societies may eventually be limited to one session.
- that Dreiser Studies may have a new binding.
Tom Riggio reported that those interested in presenting at
the next ALA meeting should send proposals to him.
Paul Orlov asked that someone be appointed as Director at
Large. Shawn St. Jean was unanimously selected. |
