Dr. Doug Gamble received the 2009 North Carolina Geographical Society Educator of the Year Award. The award recognizes outstanding service and commitment to geographic education in North Carolina.

 Chris Dumas & Doug Gamble met with Congressmen Mike McIntyre and Walter Jones, Senators Richard Burr and Kay Hagan, and their respective staff in Washington, DC on Oct. 22. The purpose of the meeting was to communicate results of recent studies on the potential impacts of climate change and sea level rise on coastal North Carolina.

Roger Shew is recipient of the Robert H. Dott Sr. Memorial Award for the Best Publication by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists for 2007. He is co-editor of and an author in the book “Atlas of Deep-Water Outcrops: AAPG Studies in Geology 56” . The award will be presented at the 2009 AAPG annual convention in Denver.

Dr. Doug Gamble was recently chosen to participate in a National Science Foundation funded grant to expand the educational resources and networks of the Association of American Geographers' Center for Global Geography Education. He will collaborate with geographers from the UK and Palestine to develop interactive web based materials concerning the geography of water resources. The materials will be used and tested by UNCW students in a special course offered fall 2008.

Dr. Doug Gamble has been selected to participate in the NSF funded workshop Expanding Education Networks in the Americas to be held May 19-21 in La Serena, Chile.
The workshop will assist faculty in development of international collaborations in undergraduate education and research. In addition, he will present his research of Caribbean drought at the international research congress, Geography in the Americas, following the workshop May 21-26.
