The B.S. program is designed specifically for students interested in pursuing research or academic teaching careers and/or an advanced degree in the geological sciences. Because geology continues to become more integrative, technical and global in its approach, both degree programs encourage students to develop basic proficiencies in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and biology, and effective oral and written communication skills including computer literacy. Requirements for a Major in Geology for the B.S. degree: Catalogue Year 2006-2007 74 hours. Core requirements: GLY 101, 171, 172, 201, 311, 312, 337, 431, 441, 470, 495, CHM 101, CHM 102, MAT 161-162, PHY 101-102 or 201-202. In addition, students must complete seven hours of elective courses in geology selected from: GLY 335, 391, 392, 393, 394, 402, 420, 426, 440, 443, 465, 472, 480 and 489.
