The Department of English sponsors a number of scholarships, including:
The Michael D. Wentworth Student Travel Fellowship
The fellowship fund, the gift of Mr. Charles F. Green III, provides $23,000 annually to allow a select number of students to travel to sites, in America or abroad, associated with their favorite writers and works of literature. Deadline for application: October 9, 2009. Application
It is expected that most travel will be taken during spring break or summer and be completed prior to the student's graduation. Students whose travel is funded must keep a journal and make a public presentation about their travels following their return. List of Wentworth Fellows. The Louise Jackson Green Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to an English major based on merit as a first priority, with exemplary moral character and leadership potential serving as secondary considerations. The student must be a formally declared English major with a concentration in literature and must be a rising junior or senior. Application

The Anne Green Saus Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded annually to an English major with a concentration in literature
or professional writing. The scholarship will be awarded with merit as the first consideration and need as a secondary consideration. The scholarship will be valued at the in-state tuition and fee rate in effect at the time of award plus a $200 book allowance. Application

The University Bookstore Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to two English majors at $125 each, to be used for textbooks and supplies at the University Bookstore. Application
Awards
Composition Essay Contest
At the end of each semester, instructors in sections of ENG 101, 103, and 201 submit copies of exceptional student essays to the Director of Composition. Essays from the previous calendar year are read and judged each spring semester by a faculty committee. Essays from ENG 101 sections are judged as a group, and essays from ENG 103 and 201 are judged together in a second group. Awards of $50, $30, and $20 are made to the writers of the top three essays in each of the two groups. The award winners and their instructors attend a luncheon to celebrate the essayists and their accomplishments.
The Outstanding Graduating English Major Award
Awarded at spring graduation each year, English faculty choose a graduating major who, in their judgment, has worked hardest for the betterment of the department, its majors, and him or herself.

Awarded at spring graduation each year, English graduate faculty choose a graduate student who, in their judgment, has worked hardest for the betterment of the department, its graduate students, and him or herself.
