Cape Fear Regional Council of Governments - Lead regional
agency designated by NCGS 160A to promote cooperative arrangements and
coordinated action among it's member governments to address regionally
significant matters. Students will interact daily with key government
officials to resolve local government problems, prepare studies, and draft
ordinances for cities, towns, and counties.
Cape Fear River Watch - Part of the River Keepers of
America organization. A non-profit group that monitors and tests the river
and sand creeks and provides community education programs about fresh
water systems from its facility on the Cape Fear River. Students learn
sampling, analysis, training, reporting, and environmental education.
Cape Fear Swamp Study - Long term study of the impact
of Corps of Engineers River Project on swamps and marshes of the Cape
Fear River. Students will learn about shallow monitoring electronic systems,
including downloading and data analysis. Will also incorporate boating
skills and field sampling skills, along with analytical chemistry.
Carolina Beach State Park - Internship involving resource
management activities including data collection education of park visitors,
management of endangered species, and boundary encroachment prevention.
Participation in daily park maintenance, interpretive activities, visitor
relations, and park management.
City of Wilmington Planning and Community Development - City agency responsible for planning building inspection and zoning.
Students learn about the planning process and enforcement programs. Environmental
Law (BLA 362) and Land Use Planning (GGY 270) strongly recommended.
City of Wilmington, Stormwater Services - City agency responsible for educational programs on stormwater issues and more. Good presentation skills and a willingness to meet the public are needed.
Community Boys & Girls Clubs - Community facility
on Wilmington's west side which offers environmental education to students
and parents. Opportunity to work with environmental justice issues.
Congressman Mike McIntyre - Field office staff member
for local Congressman. Opportunity to learn constituent casework and to
work on environmental issues being considered by the NC Legislators and
the General Assembly. Environmental Law strongly recommended.
Conservation Council of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
based, non-profit umbrella organization for environmental groups throughout
the state. Opportunity for semester away (12 credit hours) working in
the Triangle with legislative and administrative issues. Students will
work with nearly every environmental organization.
CP&L, in Harris - Internship working at Harris visitors
center where all nuclear plant environmentalists work. Will work on public
relations & education.
CP&L, in Southport - Internship at coal fired generating
plant emphasizing water sampling and testing but including other aspects
of environmental health. Opportunity to work with major utility (read
mafia) to learn systems and procedures. Field sampling background desirable.

and Safety Director for Nuclear Power Plant. Power Plant opportunity also
to work with the units environmental testing laboratory. Students work
with the Environmental health and Safety Director doing sampling, analysis,

with conservation organization that manages all national parks in Belize.

of statewide conservation organization performing field work, data collection,
and report writing.
Nature Conservancy(s) - Work with various land trust
organizations in the preservation of rural and urban open space. Environmental

for county government. Opportunity to learn operation of a Law Office
and a county as well as to work hands on with current court cases. Environmental

New Hanover County Environmental Management - Internship
at the county's incinerator, landfill, and county wetlands project. Students
work with the Environmental Health and Safety Director doing sampling,
analysis, training, reporting. Field sampling background desirable. Students
must be available for on site field sampling at 7:15am on days they work.
New Hanover County Planning - County comprehensive planning
agency which is currently updating the Local Coastal Plan. Opportunity
to work with professional planners and to observe the land use process
up close. Environmental Law and Land Use Planning strongly recommended.
New Hanover Regional Medical Center - Opportunity to
work in major medical facility in two areas. 1 - Environmental Health
and Safety, 2 - Risk management (analyzing and working with all types
of risk in the hospital, including environmental issues).

with the land unit of State's attorney on submerged lands issues. Also,
opportunity in Raleigh for semester away (12 credit hours) working with
