NC Division of Water Quality Intern - For credit internship with NC DWQ Spring 2010. Work directly with field personnel on permitting, monitoring and enforcement issues. Requires strong academic record and field methods courses or experience. Must have 2 full days available for field. Preference to students who can work into summer. APPLY ASASP. Erosion: Water Quality/Quantity: Job description - Assist in well-pump experiment (October 4-5), assist in well sample collection and analysis (October 23). Wetland Ecology Lab - UNCW - Paid Internship - Demanding practicum World-Class lab. The intern will gain knowledge working in tidal estuarine systems. The prime candidate will need to be available for work between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm on Tuesday and Thursday, work 20 hrs. a week, lift 50 lbs. work in all environmental conditions, enjoy the outdoors and work as a team player. Boating experience is a plus. Good GPA and serious commitment required - availablity for sping is needed a plus. Each protected property has many responsibilities associate with it; this position will focus mainly on assisting the staff to write Baseline Documentation Reports(BDR's). The BDR contains information that describes conditions of the property at the time of easement recordation. This includes physical property features, as well as property owner information, property descriptions and boundaries, a summary of conservation values, and any other critical items that describe the property to be put under easement. This includes property photos and appropriate map documentation. This position will be mainly office based but there would be opportunities to assist with field work if desired. There is also opportunities to be involved in writing management plans for conservation lands. Qualifications: The successful applicant will enjoy working in and out of doors; as well as possess strong interpersonal and writing skills. Being in good physical condition is necessary for any outdoor work. In addition, GIS/GPS skills are desired but not required. The Town of Wrightsville Beach - is seeking an unpaid intern to prepare and conduct a user survey of recycling activity at the Town's recycling location. This position would work with the Public Works Department to develop and implement a survey instrument to assist in determining: what type of material is currently being recycled, what additional types of material would be recycled if allowed, how much material is recycled, and why the town location was selectd as the location for recylcing. Surveys will be conducted at various times which will be determined as part of the survey devlopment process. The hours and responsibilities are as usual - 10-12 hours/week for 3 credit hours, hours/days flexible, combination of office work/field work/meeting assistance. Pender County Planning and Community Development is seeking an unpaid intern for assistance of various projects within our department. Please consider this as notice for the fall semester as well. The position would involve various duties within the planning department, specifically working with planners on short and long term projects. We are currently working on a comprehensive land use plan and a unified development ordinance, both of which are long term projects. Short term and daily projects may include but are not limited to reviewing applications for variances, special use permits, subdivisions, sign permits, subdivision master, preliminary, and final plats, and CAMA minor and major permit reviews. The intern may also be involved in GIS mapping projects and database management. This would be an ideal position for a student interested in experience in planning, public administration, coastal environmental management, zoning, permitting, and/or code enforcement. Hours per week are considered flexible. Our main office is located in Burgaw, and there is a car pool set up if the student is available for a full day. We are also staffing our office in Hampstead, so occasional time in Hampstead with a planner would be available. Monthly board meetings occur at night, and occasional attendance would be encouraged and beneficial to the student, but not required. Again, the position is unfortunately unpaid; however I can speak from experience that volunteer internships are certainly beneficial and educational experiences. One would be to analyze sediment samples to determine if a change has occurred in the sediment composition of primary nursery areas. The other is to assist with collection of data in the fishery independent assessment program. Both projects are fairly intensive but should be a rewarding experience for the student. The Cape Fear Audubon Society is looking for an intern with a background in the natural sciences and an interest in education to assist the CFAS education committee in planning and implementing an education outreach program with local K-12 schools. EPA Summer Internship Programs - Continuous Environmental Protection Agency Intern Program Carolina Ocean Studies - Continuous - is seeking interns for the Spring 2009. Internships will take place during marine education cruises to ocean reefs, the Gulf Stream, anduninhabited barrier islands. Intern tasks can include water sampling and data collection from fishing (rod and reel) and trawl samples. Likely fish species include members of the sea bass, porgy, and grunt families. The position also includes other duties as assigned. This is a great experience which will expose interns to environmental education, seamanship, and marine collecting. Hours are flexible to accommodate work or school schedules. Most cruises are 3 hours in length.
