The Film Studies Department encourages students to study in a foreign country as part of their college studies, and UNC-Wilmington offers a wide array of study abroad programs.
Film studies majors participate in a variety of study-abroad programs, but the following program has been specially tailored to meet the needs of Film Studies majors:
THE NORTH CAROLINA CONSORTIUM IN PARIS FOR FILM STUDIES MAJORS
Paris is considered the world cinema capital because of the astonishing number and variety of films screened every day. In addition to its 110 commercial movie theaters, which each week screen more than 300 different films from various nations, the city has three of the world’s most renowned film centers: The Cinemathèque Française (which projects 1300 movies per year), the Forum des Images (6700 movies per year), and the Pompidou Center at Beaubourg (hundreds of movies per year). Screenings are in 35mm, and most theater networks and film centers have inexpensive monthly subscription rates and student prices.
The consortium program generally lasts for one semester but may be extended to a full academic year. Host families, frequent excursions, cultural activities, and course offerings provide a multitude of cultural possibilities for UNCW students.
Courses
The Consortium in Paris for film studies majors consists of three courses, totaling 15 credits, six of which apply to the film studies major:
Paris Orientation (3 credits)
Taught in French. An orientation to life in Paris and current issues in France. Film studies majors complete an orientation course specially tailored to the subject of film and/or filmmaking in Paris, and the course satisfies an elective requirement in the film studies major.
Intensive French Language (9 credits)
Taught in French at the Sorbonne. Classes meet 2 hours daily, 5 days a week, plus a language lab for the first month.
A course in French Cinema or World Cinema (3 credits)
Taught in English. This course includes class instruction, discussion of film clips, and weekly visits to Parisian cinemas. Previous classes have included History of European Cinema and History of French Cinema. This course satisfies an elective or world cinema requirement in the film studies major.
Eligibility requirements
The consortium program is open to all sophomores, juniors, and seniors in good academic standing with a 2.75 minimum GPA.
The French language component is very strong, with intensive courses at Sorbonne and a home-stay. Second-year college-level French or above is required, but the program is designed for non-majors as well as majors.
Applications
Applications for fall semester study are due April 15. Spring semester applications are due October 15. Applications include a $200 non-refundable deposit.
