Hunger Bytes Video Competition — 9/29/2009
The contest is a joint project by the World Food Program and YouTube, and
the videos be showcased on our website and YouTube pages, which both have
international reach. The winners will be chosen by a panel of celebrity judges - so this is also a great opportunity for students to have their
work seen by major players in the industry. Last year's judges included
leaders in film, web and humanitarian aid, including Edward Zwick, Director
of “Blood Diamond” and “The Last Samurai,” Oscar-winning producer Cathy
Schulman (“Crash,” “Darfur Now,” “The Illusionist”) and Steve Grove, head
of YouTube News and Politics. The winners were sent to Ethiopia to see a
project first hand and film with WFP.
We are looking for 30-60 sec spots that highlight the issue of hunger. We’re looking for the edgy and provocative videos about hunger; whatever it takes to make people think and to change attitudes. Film, stills, montage, animation – anything goes!
We begin accepting submissions on October 16th - World Food Day - and the competition ends December 31. For more information and to see past winners, check out www.wfp.org/hungerbytes. This year, the world has reached an historic milestone with more than a billion people, or one in six people on this planet, going to bed hungry. Hunger Bytes is one action among many under WFP’s Billion for Billion Campaign, which focuses on engaging the 1.6 billion online users to step up and help the billion hungry people in the world.
WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency and the UN’s frontline agency for hunger solutions. In 2009, WFP aims to feed 108 million people in 74 countries. We receive no UN dues and have a 7% overhead. We don't have a huge PR team or hire out firms to do our marketing, so we rely on partnerships and creativity to help us get the word out – and that’s where motivated, creative students can make a big difference raising awareness, while showcasing their own talent.

Your Support is Needed for "Lamaze of the Dead" — 9/16/2009
Hi, my name is Carolyn Burns and I am a 2009 graduate of the UNCW Film Studies department. Recently, I co-wrote, executive produced, and even acted in a short film that a group of Wilmington film professionals came together to make, LAMAZE OF THE DEAD for a short film contest hosted by the horror cable channel Chiller, a sister network of Sci-Fi (syfy). A group of judges, including Kevin Greutert (Director, Saw VI), Thomas Vital (Executive Vice President of Programming and Original Movies, SyFy Channel) and John Murdy (Creative Director, Universal Studios Hollywood) chose the top ten from over a hundred submissions, and we gained a spot! The top ten are now open to PUBLIC VOTING, and that's where you come in!
S UPPORT your local film community, and SUPPORT your film studies alumni, and go online to vote for the short! All ten submissions are under 3 minutes, so you can watch all ten in twenty minutes (some are very short) or just LAMAZE in three!
