Don't wait until you are admitted to apply for financial aid with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can apply as early as January 1st and you should do so as soon as you have your tax information ready. We suggest you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid on line by March 1st. You will need a Federal Personal Identification (PIN) to sign it on-line, so be sure to visit the PIN Web Site. |

To qualify for federal financial aid, as well as many other forms of financial aid, you must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student or in a qualified certification program. You may not receive financial aid for audited classes or classes that do not count towards your degree or certification. |

UNCW offers a limited number of named scholarships. The Application for UNCW Scholarships becomes available on November 15th and will be open until April 1st. |

Some financial aid is awarded on a first-come first-serve basis with limited funding. Having a completed and accurate application on file as soon as possible gives you the best chance of being awarded from these funds. We begin awarding these funds in early March. |

If we have received your FAFSA by March 15th and all necessary documentation is complete and accurate by April 15th, your financial aid should be ready to pay your bill when it comes due. |

Beginning fall 2007, students who complete the FAFSA are automatically considered for UNCW's Seahawk's S.O.A.R. (Support, Opportunity, Access and Responsibility) Program. This program targets financial assistance for our neediest students and provides the possibility of graduating in four years with a maximum of $4,000 in student loan debt. No separate application is required, however all students who wish to be considered must file the FAFSA and furnish copies of parent and student tax returns each year. Students eligible for consideration will be contacted by the Financial Aid & Veterans Services Office. |

If you do receive a scholarship from an outside source you must inform our office as soon as possible, so that we may update your awards. To speed up the process you should ask the awarding organization to make the scholarship check payable only to UNCW and sent directly to the Financial Aid & Veterans Services Office. Be sure that the check has your Student ID number and name so we know to whom the scholarship is awarded. |

Funds in excess of payment of tuition, fees, books and supplies are considered taxable income for U.S. income tax purposes and it is the student's responsibility to report this income on his or her tax returns. |

The FAVSO awards students as much eligible aid as possible up to their cost of attendance. This includes eligible grant aid and offers of Stafford Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans. PLUS or Alternative loans are often needed to meet tuition, fees and other expenses up to cost of attendance.
