If you have already applied for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) you may need to add UNCW to the list of schools who receive your information. You can do so by adding our school code. If you have not applied, you should complete the application now, or as soon as you have your tax information. We suggest you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by March 1st. You need a Federal Personal Identification (PIN) to sign it on-line, so be sure to visit the PIN Web Site. |
|
| Students who are entering in the Summer must complete the 2007-2008 FAFSA as well as the Summer School Financial Aid Application. | |
|
To qualify for federal financial aid, as well as many other forms of financial aid, you must be enrolled as a degree seeking student or in a qualified certification program. You can not receive financial aid for audited classes or classes that do not count towards your degree or certification. |
| It is important that a student transferring understands that any Federal and State financial aid received during the current academic year while at another institution reduces the funds available to that student when they transfer to UNCW. In most cases this refers to Federal PELL Grants, and Federal Student Loans. If you used half of your PELL grant in the Fall at one institution and then transfer to UNCW for the Spring, you only have half of your PELL remaining to use at UNCW. | |
| Your FAFSA provides our institution information about the Federal Financial Aid you have earned at other institutions. If, due to errors on the application, some awards did not appear on the FAFSA and notification is made at a later date, UNCW is required to adjust awards appropriately. For this reason it is to the student's advantage to make sure their FAFSA is as accurate as possible. | |
| In most cases a student can not receive Federal and State financial aid at more than one institution at the same time. | |
The Application for UNCW Scholarships becomes available on November 15th and is open until April 1st. See the Financial Aid & Veterans Services section of the current catalog for a listing of these scholarships. Students who transfer after this date do not usually receive scholarships. |
|
Some financial aid is awarded on a first come first serve basis with limited funding. We begin awarding these funds in early March. Most transfer students in their first semester do not receive all of the awards for which they may be eligible. However, they are considered during the next academic year as long as they have a completed and accurate application on file. |
|
If we have received your FAFSA at least 3 months in advance and all necessary documentation is complete and accurate your financial aid should be ready to pay your bill when it comes due. |
|
| Other scholarship opportunities include departmental scholarship programs and the Honors Scholars Program. You can check with your academic department of interest for departmental scholarships. For more information on UNCW's Honors Scholars Program please visit http://www.uncw.edu/honors | |
If you are interested in outside scholarship sources, just check out our listing of Scholarship Search Engines and Advertised Scholarships. |
|
If you do receive a scholarship from an outside source you must inform our office as soon as possible, in order to update your awards. To speed up the process you should ask the awarding organization to make the scholarship check payable only to UNCW and sent directly to the Financial Aid & Veterans Services Office. Be sure that the check lists your Student ID and name so we know to whose account we should apply funds. |
|
| Students receive E-mail notifications of their awards and any missing information. These e-mails direct the student to SEANET. You must print, accept, sign and return your Award Letter. If you would like a printed copy of your Award Letter you may call or e-mail your financial aid counselor. | |
| SEANET is the Student Electronic Access Web Site to which all students have access. This secure web site is one of the most important tools for you to use during your career here at UNCW. Through this site you have access to your Financial Aid Award Letter, Notifications of Missing Information, your Student Account, and links to all important sites you may need. You also need a SEANET PIN. If you do not have one, go to the SEANET Guide for Students to learn what to do. | |
| You have a UNCW E-mail account, which you were given at Orientation. It is very important that you check your e-mail at least once a week. This office sends most of its notifications to students by e-mail to this address. You receive a notice whenever your award has changed, with directions on how to get to SEANET. You also receive notices to check SEANET for missing information. Click here for more information about your UNCW E-Mail. | |
| Buying books is the responsibility of the student. You should plan to buy your own books ahead of time. Transfer students may not have access to The Book Buying Program, which allows a student to pay at Orientation and have his books ordered for him. Please visit the UNCW Book Store Web Site. | |
| Refund checks for any financial aid over and above the cost of tuition, fees, dormitory charges, cafeteria plans, and other such expenses will not be available until after classes have started.
Before a refund is issued to Higher One your registered hours are compared to your anticipated hours (which are taken from the FAFSA), to be sure that the you are registered for at least as many hours as your award was based on. If you are registered for less hours, then the refund is not sent to Higher One and the award is adjusted. |
|
| If you are interested in Student Loans UNCW participates in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Student Loan Program. To be considered you must complete the FAFSA and to accept the award you must sign a Master Promissory Note. If you have had Direct Loans at another institution your Master Promissory Note is valid. The best way to sign your note is with E-Sign on the web (needs acrobat reader). | |
| If you have been awarded Federal Work Study then you must apply for a job. To do so and learn more about this award please see our Work Study page. | |
