Book_2 bjpg.jpgLatino Book Club is a community outreach club, which aspires to bring to its members the rich and varied experiences of books written by the Latino authors, of the United States. It comprises of members from the local community and the University of North Carolina Wilmington family. The Book Club is launching its first Book Drive in fall 2009 to collect books for three local schools and their ESL program. Hoggard High School, Williston Middle School, and Mary C. Williams will be the recipient schools. Appropriate books in English, Spanish, and bilingual editions are being accepted. Monetary donations are also welcome.

The Latino population in Wilmington has seen tremendous growth in the past several years. As one of the larger regional educational organization in the area, UNCW is proud to extend its services to the people of this region. Educating the youth is the primary goal of any educational institute. Making education meaningful and fun at the same time is always a challenge. Latino Book Club’s book drive seeks to extend UNCW’s educational goals to our communities’ children. By targeting local ESL programs’ needs we seek to help narrow the gap created by cultural differences and expectations. Books appropriate for children, in their native language as well as the English language they are learning is the best way to prepare them for their encounters with the unknown, share the known, and imagine their own adventures.

Donations

You may participate in this project by donating children's books (for ages 6-16) in Spanish, English or bilingual editions at our droff off locations and event sites, or we will also be happy to pick them up.
