"Monkey" cross, The Mystery of the Buried Crosses
In 1930 Garland published his last--and certainly strangest--book, The Mystery of the Buried Crosses. In it he chronicled his discovery of unusual buried objects, often in the form of rude crosses, which he believed were pre-Christian ceremonial objects fabricated by Indians from Central America and southern California, who buried them to conceal them from Spanish missionaries, who viewed the objects as remnants of pagan religious rites. What made Garland's discoveries so unusual was that he found them after being directed to their location by spirit voices, conveyed to him by a medium. The book is his account of his discoveries and his method of gathering "scientific" proof of the survival of personality after death. Read the book and see whether the old duffer convinces you.
