Garland and his Teepee, ca. 1901
From about 1896 to 1905 Garland was quite concerned about government policies toward Native Americans. He travelled extensively through the west, visiting reservations, gathering anectdotes and jotting down his observations in notebooks. His stories about the Indian appeared in leading magazines from 1896 to 1905, and many were gathered in The Book of the American Indian (1923), with illustrations by Frederic Remington.
